Student arrested after JuicyCampus ‘joke’

p2pnet news | P2P:- “Always anonymous,” p2pnet posted in February. “Always juicy”.
We were talking about JuicyCampus.com, “founded on August 1, 2007 with the simple mission of enabling online anonymous free speech on college campuses,” it says, going on, “C’mon. Give us the juice!”
But, a “joke” posted on the site led to the arrest of George So, a 20-year-old junior at New York’s Colgate University.
Quoted in the Chronicle of Higher Education, it said >>>
I wonder if i could shut down the school … by saying I’m going to shoot as many people as i can in my second class tomorrow. I hope I get more than 50 …….. For liability reasons and ip tracking I won’t leave it at that. But seriously, this site is rediculous, if it got big, and someone put the effort into writing a big long serious suicide note informing all readers that he would kill over 100 kids, they could shut down the school. Nice.
But Colgate sophomore Brittany Messenger didn’t find the joke funny.
She’d landed on JuicyCampus when she was researching for an article for the student newspaper and, “She says she initially did not take the message literally, but after talking with her mother about it, she decided to alert authorities, just in case,” says the Chronicle’s Wired Campus, going on:
” ‘You just can’t joke about this,’ she says. ‘That isn’t even funny for a second’.”
Campus cops alerted the local police who weren’t amused either, says the Utica Observer-Dispatch.
Authorities posted 10 two-man units at the campus and stationed officers at the high school, says the story, quoting Hamilton police chief James Tilbe as saying:
“We worked on it throughout the night, getting personnel down here.”
The Madison County Sheriff’s Department was also called in.
“Today, you don’t take that stuff lightly,” said Tilbe.
“College officials alerted students of the posting by e-mail, said Charlie Melichar, Colgate’s vice president for public relations and communications,” states the Utica Observer-Dispatch.
“Given recent events, including a February shooting at Northern Illinois University that left six people dead, all potential threats must be investigated.”

The irony of it all the Americans run around pretending to save everyone and they are the ones in the deepest shit on the planet.
I’ve seen so much crap about America i wouldn’t take a vacation there even if they’d pay me to do it.
I love Europe,i love Europe.

WTF? So, killing enemy solders in the “war on terror” gets encouraged, but a parody of this whole overprotective society gets serious attention? No offense, but as a kid(7th grader with an understanding of this “series of tubes”), my standards are set like this: Oh, there is a war going on. All the news outlets and the teachers/police/other people all support rooting out “terrorists”, and killing is okay. So, whenever someone talks about how someone got killed while doing x, I really could care less. It is only one person.

People have no sense of humor anymore. It’s clear that he wasn’t serious. At most, they should have sent a cop over to his home to tell him to knock it off. Just the sight of a cop showing up on his doorstep would probably have him crapping his pants.
How long will it be until we have people being arrested for saying that they’re going to “shooting” someone in photography class the next day? Or for saying that they’re going to “bomb” at a public appearance?

Idiots! Thats not funny! Thats just stupid! Idiots!

The article doesn’t say how he was identified.

It is debatable about whether he should have been arrested or not, but it was stupid to say that on the internet. Big Brother is always watching.
If you think you have anonymity on the internet, you are naive.

It’s entirely possible to be a ghost, indeed, on the net. It does require, patience, research and a willingness to do it, however.

Funny how some silly little girl (Brittany huh, probably a blond cheerleader) had to go ruin a good thing by taking it too literally. It was obvious the person was “musing aloud” and I saw no inherent threat in the words. Too bad that the term “free speech” no longer means anything in the “land of the free”…sometimes makes we want to move to Antigua or maybe even Canada….no, nix that last one.

anonymity is completely possible on the net…..you just need a public computer.
