Dying days of the RIAA

p2pnet news | RIAA News:- Warner Music, EMI, Vivendi Universal and Sony BMG and their RIAA, CRIA, ARIA, JRIA, etc, etc, are suffering under the delusion they can treat us —- their customers; the people who keep them in business, lest we forget —- like crap.
For the past five years The Big 4 have been calling us criminals and thieves, trying to sue us into buying their low-quality, high-priced ‘product’.
They’ve been pumping out BS PR and most members of the mainstream media have been regurgitating the Big Music lies and disinformation as though it’s reliable and accurate material.
Warner, EMI, Vivendi and Sony BMG think they can make the lives of ordinary people such as Tanya Andersen literal hell. And get away with it.
But no matter what they think, and no matter what the corporate press says, the bizarre sue ‘em all marketing campaign, fronted in the US by RIAA multi-millionaire spin doctors Mitch ‘The Don’ Bainwol and Cary ‘Tough Love’ Sherman, isn’t working, hasn’t worked, and will never work.
Not even nearly.
Every minute of every hour of every day
The Big 4 think their RIAA is seen as a reputable organisation, honestly trying to act in the best interests of musicians and music lovers.
For the past two weeks, p2pnet has been running a survey and ‘RIAA’ is far and away the item most frequently ticked.
Is that because the vast majority of people respect it and its efforts to ‘clean up the music industry’ by suing Big 4 customers?
No. The RIAA is universally loathed and detested and the people who work for it and keep it afloat are regarded as the lowest of the low. p2pnet’s RIAA section is popular for one reason only: in it, people can see what’s really happening stacked against Big 4 and RIAA lies.
Before the Net, the entertainment cartels who own, or are directly or indirectly associated with, most major print and electronic media outlets, controlled what people saw and heard. But in this 21st digital century, thanks to blogs, web sites, IM, chats, texting, and so on, people around the world are talking to each other direct every minute of every hour of every day, completely by-passing the corporate media.
This in turn means for the first time in history, accurate news and information is consistently and constantly reaching us all.
Before the Net, Tanya Andersen’s story would never have seen the light of day. However, it’s being broadcast everywhere by online media and the ‘traditional’ press is consequently being forced to pick it up and report it.
On Saturday, “Recommended reading for all interested in the RIAA’s litigation war against p2p file sharing is the amended class action complaint just filed in Oregon in Andersen v. Atlantic,” said NewYorkCountryLawyer in a Slashdot post picked up by no lesser entity than Slashdot’s famous CmdrTaco.
Today, it was the first item in a string of Google news stories .
“This landmark 109-page document (pdf) tells both the general story of the RIAA’s campaign against ordinary folks, and the specific story of its harassment of Tanya Andersen, and even of her young daughter,” it says, going on:
“The complaint includes federal and state RICO claims, as well as other legal theories, and alleges that ‘The world’s four major recording studios had devised an illegal enterprise intent on maintaining their virtually complete monopoly over the distribution of recorded music.’ The point has been made by one commentator that the RIAA won’t be able to weasel its out of this one by simply withdrawing it; this one, they will have to answer for. If the relief requested in the complaint is granted, the RIAA’s entire campaign will be shut down for good.”
Below are just five of the weekend’s headlines:
- ‘Woman to Record Industry: Stop Spying,” says the Associated Press.
- ‘Woman To Record Industry: Stop Spying” says CBS News, repeating the AP wire story word-for-word.
- ‘Woman says anti-music piracy campaign illegally spies on people,” says ABC 13 News.
- ‘Lawsuit could force RIAA to reveal investigation techniques,’ says Computerworld.
- ‘The RIAA, Problems All Around, Will They Have To Lift Their Skirts?’ – wonders Blogger News Network.
The Big 4 have spent a fortune trying to blackmail us.
It might have worked back in the physical 1990s when the cartels ruled, but it isn’t going to happening a digital era when we’ve gone from being compliant, cash-cow corporate ‘consumers’ to customers who can, and do, pick and choose and who know we’re in charge, not the venal entertainmment cartels and their vicious attack dogs, such as the RIAA.
Stay tuned.
But you already know what’s going to happen ……

The reality is this: before the Internet came along, rabble rousers such as yourself went unheard.

That’s what make the internet so fantastic. Everyone can have a say. People are taking back power. We can all communicate now, and this scares the powers that be, hence the reason why they are trying so hard to clamp down on everything.

If the RIAA and the CRIA win in the courts the Internet will become infested with spy programs which will in effect shutdown the internet to all but vested interests.

Yeah, the whole rotten bunch will circle the wagons, buy off a bunch of judges, hire some congressmen and senators, etc., lobby G.W.B. to forego his oil interests for long enough to pass a couple more “executive edicts”
to save the “poor recording industry” and the case will be killed.
Then it’s all back to normal. MORE INNOCENT VICTIMS ARE HOUNDED ALMOST TO THE POINT OF DEATH by the noble RIAA.

yes Michael you are probably right with your prediction what’s going to happen but you forgot the last stage which is:

I am proud to say that I am no longer helping to keep them in business. I used to enjoy listening to some of their music. I used to have an extensive cd collection. It was stolen and I now have no plans to ever replace a single one.
The RIAA’s lawsuits have spoiled my appetite for music because I know if I give them a cent I will be funding the next round of lawsuits. I don’t download their music; I try not to listen to their music; and I certainly will never again buy their music.
I used to appreciate music. I used to be able to listen to it guilt free. Now, I think that even if the lawsuits stopped tomorrow, I wouldn’t want to start listening again.

you can do that if you choose the right artist/labels!
I’m proud that I can now offer you some of that for free to test out.
for example:

Oh and please should I make an error in labeling something “RIAA-safe” which is not, just inform me as fast as possible so I can stop promote them!

Just be careful everyone, there is nothing more dangerous than a wounded animal. What is now quite worrying is the potential involvement of governments and ISP filtering eg. France, Uk, Australia, Japan. Just beware these people (commercial) want to own and control you as a nice fat easy revenue stream. Governments – hell they just want control as most politicians were bullied school kids or school bullies !
So the saying goes – you can fool some of the people all of the time, most of the people most of the time, but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time !

Wow Jon, you seem to be more and more outspoken against the RIAA et al these days, and who could blame you? Good on you. It’s good to see. I only hope your prediction is right, for all our sakes. I will never buy another CD in support of the Big 4 and their henchmen, nor any of their other digital products, including DRM filled Blu-Ray media.

I wouldn’t put it past the RIAA bastards to ramrod some kind of “music tax” though, where they will stay alive buy levying a fee on people ISP bills. Of course the justification will be to “pay the musicians”, but we know where most of the money will go.

so,it may finally be coming to a head,i so hope, and the head i wish for is the one on top of the riaa, preferrably on a platter!! my main question is,why did it ever take this long to get here ??we are the people, the power, and inreality in control! why wasn’t it us who took control after the first time it happened, that the riaa launched there first terror suite?!! why didn’t we hammer the first guys((i belive metcllica) i know wrong spelling(metallica)when they first went after there “fans”we could have then left them all, bloodied in the dirt!! i do believe all artists should receive fair compensation, but i think we have to deceide on how long the word fair carries on!! so as much as i’m happy to see it finally coming close to an end??maybe. as one person said becareful of a wounded animal(although i think it’s a slite to the animals) lets hope it all words for the lady and that it will leave some recourse to all those they(riaa, record companies and governments who are now jumping onthe hurt people bandwagon!!

The computer technology changed every thing.
Parasites like the RIAA or the corporation of scientology don’t understood that. There is absolutely nothing they can do to prevent people from communicating with each others with computers. Even if Internet was completely taken other by a handful of rogues business, it will not change a thing.
First so far even totalitarian regimes such as North Korea has been powerless to stop people form spreading news via the Internet. There is Siphon, There is Tor, encryption, anonymisation, IP address can be faked, information can be encrypted applications can fake identity . . . With computer and software every thing and more is possible.
Even if Internet was to fall there are already few decentralized wifi client server applications that can build a decentralized WIFI network, without ISP! These applications can deploy worldwide and potentially replace Internet!
Digital communications is like an overwhelming tide that nothing and nobody can stop.
Parasites corporation such as Scientology the RIAA or the MPAA does not get that. They do their craps then they check the TV they control to check if information is leaking there. Bad luck for them! People no longer get theirs news from TV. They got their news from Internet. To bad! Every one knows what they are doing and they are fucked!
This is why the Boycott is still expending.
And As far as the music industry is concerned, we are the customers, we decide who get our money and who don’t and we decided that the companies member of the RIAA and MPAA don’t and this is forever.

“I try not to listen to their music; and I certainly will never again buy their music.”
You don’t have to buy music form them. Use the RIAA Radar online to see if a recording is indies or not.
http://www.riaaradar.com/
I use it often.
Also artists have begun to sell their own recording themselves. For exemple I just got a CD form the Phyladelphia Symphnonic orchetra directly form the orchestra association online.
NO RIAA not Vivendic/Univerdirty, Not Sony/BMG, not EMI no TIme Warner no foreign parasites in my way and no Hassle! And I am not financing extortions or other crimes.
March 17th, 2008 at 12:23 pm
I sincerly doubt that the RIAA will be able to levy the ISP but if they do we will boycott the ISPs too. After all who need crapy ISP such as Comcast?

“the Internet will become infested with spy programs which will in effect shutdown the internet to all but vested interests.”
i don’t see that happening…we’ll switch protocols, encrypt, use TOR, build parallel darknets if we have to. the internet is designed from the ground-up to withstand nuclear attack. It re-organizes itself and routes around damage. The people that want to censor the net may have money and other resources, but they cant match the geek-factor. They’ve been five steps behind technology since the napster days. They just dont know where to begin dealing with the kind of minds that build a wiki so they can collaborate on strategies for defeating the great firewall of china, or construct elaborate sneakernets where people swap data on USB drives in meatspace.
