Sony touts ‘new’ online rentals

p2pnet news | Music:- Sony BMG says it’s developing an online music rental service.

Pretending he doesn’t know precisely when the ’service’ will be launched, and that he doesn’t have the exact details to hand, company CEO Rolf Schmidt-Holtz (right) says the, “simplest option would be a flat rate” monthly fee of six to eight euros ($9 to $12) for unlimited access to Sony BMG’s catalogue, and that downloads would be compatible with all players.

Quoted by the Canadian Press, which in turn quotes a story in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, it’s, “even possible that clients could keep some songs indefinitely, that they would own them even after the subscription expired,” says Schmidt-Holtz.

They might own them after they’ve already paid for them, eh? What a guy!

Adds CP:

“Schmidt-Holtz was quoted as saying the unit was in talks with other major music distributors but did not disclose with whom and added that it was possible mobile phone operators could be brought on board, with the aim of letting users download their songs to their cell phones.”

No need to stay tuned.
