LimeWire chalks up 500,000

p2pnet.net News:- It looks as if p2p punters prefer no-ware over spyware.

More than 500,000 people downloaded the new, squeaky-clean LimeWire 4.0, last week, broken down as Windows – 347,000; OSX – 91,000; Mac Classic – 15,000; and, international – 48,000.

In comparison, Morpheus downloaded more than 180,000 clients, and Grokster, 28,274 during the same period, says Lime Wire, adding that it also edged out iMesh by more than 85,000 downloads, and that, "Sharman Networks removed Kazaa Media Desktop from listing on Download.com during the same week."

That is amazing how many people downloaded Limewire. It seems decent enough to me, but ‘Slckster04′ made this interesting observation on Slyck.com…

Posted: Mon May 24, 2004 11:46 am Post subject: LIMEWIRE LIES – AFFILIATE HIJACKING

    —————–

I began using LimeWire’s new client today for the first time. LimeWire makes a big deal out of the fact that this version is adware/spyware free, but using a traffic monitor followed-up with some content inspection, I noticed that it is steadily setting cookies making me one of their affiliated users at various merchants through bfast and linksynergy, the two largest affiliate program coordinators.

In other words, when I shop at various merchants for which LimeWire is an affiliate, LimeWire makes money. Granted, that’s not costing me anything, but if I had previously followed a charity affiliate link, for example, this LimeWire effort would trump it without ever notifying me.

This is a very shady practice called Affiliate Commission Hijacking. The New York Times wrote two articles on this problem — check it out here: http://www.wilsonweb.com/wmt7/affil_hijack.htm

  2. Reader's Write Says:

Well, we knew they weren’t developing it out of the goodness of their hearts… Guess selling the “Pro” version is just not quite enough “juice” for the boys and girls over at Limewire. Not a bad app though. A person ought to be tossing those cookies on a regular basis anyway. ;-)

  3. Reader's Write Says:

True, but it seems dishonest to pose as the “Pure” file sharing network with no ads, etc. and at the same time steal money from legitimate affiliate websites.

  4. Reader's Write Says:

LimeWire 4.0 doesn’t have any adware at all. Maybe the old versions did. If you’re so unhappy, uninstall the adware. Then try installing any other app and you’ll probably get something way worse. Stop complaining.

  5. Reader's Write Says:

LimeWire 4.0 has no bundled software of any kind. Check the review by the editors of download.com and note that there is no editor’s note warning. Run spybot, adaware, or hijack this after installing limewire and you find no additional adware from LimeWire. You may however, already have other pieces of bundled software installed.
