Piet van Donge: sued by Brein

p2pnet news | Freedom:- It’s a given that anybody and anything to do with the corporate cartels is as thick as two short planks, has the imagination of stuffed zebra, moves as fast as a sloth with both feet nailed to the floor, and has the moral integrity of a bonobos chimpanzee.
The same applies to their so-called ‘trade’ organisations such as Brein in The Netherlands.
Why Brein, in particular.
Piet van Dongen is being sued by BREIN, says a p2pnet Reader’s Write.
Probably another of those hard-core 12-year-olds who are “devastating” the music and movie industries.
But No!
He’s being sued for linking to his own music.
The comment post went up on April 1, so maybe it was a spoof?
Not even that.
Here’s what van Dongen says on his site >>>
For quite some time now I have known that there is something seriously wrong with the way BREIN (the Dutch equivalent of the RIAA) operates in their war on piracy. It’s obvious that the music (and film) industry’s giants have been destroying themselves by completely not keeping up with their customer’s demands. And I know that, in a last attempt to regain control of the market, anti-piracy organizations do weird and stupid things.
But what I came across this morning in my mail box baffled and angered me (translated into English):
[…]After examining your web site, we have determined that you are illegally offering copyrighted material for download, without a license […]
BREIN then continues to threaten me with a lawsuit if I don’t remove the tracks. My own tracks! And I’m not even offering them for download, I’m just linking to my releases and streaming short clips (from external sources)!
I’m not the first one to be attacked in this way. Some months ago, a few Dutch music related web sites got attacked by Buma/Stemra (the Dutch equivalent for ASCAP or Britain’s PRS) in a similar(ly stupid) way.
I’m not sure what I can and will do about this, but I’ll keep you updated.
Please do, Piet.
Meanwhile, check out some of his music.
And definitely stray tuned.

I think I’d refuse to take them down without going into detail with them. With any luck they’d take the bait at which point one could start to have all manner of fun with them.

Unfortunately, in the US at least, you have to have a whole shitload of
cash, even if they are obviously in the wrong.
The law is for them, not us.

“got ya, didn’t?! Yesterday’s post about being sued by BREIN was a joke (and probably a display of totally bad taste).”
No kidding.
Cheers!

I’m so sorry, I feel a little guilty over this
I do however feel the same way about anti-piracy organizations as you do, and wanna thank you for the spotlight

I enjoy April Fool pranks, but I don’t think it’s part of the game to draw attention to the date, and claim the story is not a spoof. At that point it ceases to be a joke, and becomes a breach of trust.

I don’t think the poster of the article on this site knew that it was a prank. I just posted it on my own site, I had nothing to do with the posts here
I’m still sorry
