‘We’re not copyright cops’: UK ISP

p2pnet news | Freedom:- Facebook, MySpace and Bebo have been told it’ll be up to them to police almost 30,500 paedophiles in the UK.

“The detailed guidance, from the Home Office taskforce on child protection on the internet, “will also oblige social networking sites to publish prominent links to established advice services such as anti-bullying campaigns, and have a straightforward ‘report abuse’ process,” says the Guardian.

“And in extreme cases, the phone number of the local emergency services, according to a draft of the government document seen by MediaGuardian.co.uk.”

But the sites aren’t the only one ordered by UK authorities to act as online cops.

Warner Music, EMI, Vivendi Universal and Sony BMG’s BPI (British Phonographic Industry) wants ISPs to actually disconnect people, “who ignore requests to stop sharing music,” but

Charles Dunstone (right)  owner of Carphone Warehouse, which runs the TalkTalk broadband service, Britain’s third biggest provider, has told the corporate music industry enforcer to poke it, in effect, saying it’s not his job to be a Net policeman, says the BBC.

The demands are unreasonable and unworkable, he states. “We are the conduit that gives users access to the internet,” the story has him saying. “We do not control the internet, nor do we control what our users do on the internet.”

“I cannot foresee any circumstances in which we would voluntarily disconnect a customer’s account on the basis of a third party alleging a wrongdoing.”

Not only but also, Dunstone said TalkTalk would, ” fight to protect the rights of its users using the law”.

  1. Reader's Write Says:

Nice One. Pity the rest of the ISP’s are too chicken to stand up to the UK government or the music retards (industry).

  2. A famous musician Says:

I wonder how long TalkTalk’s “resistance” gives way to meek compliance with the BPI?

Jon, you’ll want to read about “The International Whisper Campaign Against Fair Use” over at http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20080403/012447736.shtml
