Actually, it WAS considered humane. Previous execution methods such as hanging could be long and painful if not done properly. The guillotine severed the head immediately and it was believed that the person either died instantly, or wasn’t aware of what had happened due to the shock. Because of the nature of being beheaded, it’s hard to collect any real evidence, but most scientists believe that even if the person is aware of what’s happened to them, it doesn’t last more than 10-15 seconds.
