I understand how the obvious misuse of corporate logos, for promotional purposes, is an obvious no no. But this is stupid, even for Apple.

I am sad to say, and an American living overseas, big corporations have a bad habit of overstating their own presence, especially when they are in another country/culture. They feel that if a name or logo of their company/product is well known their own country, that they should have full reign over it in other countries as well.

I remember a case several years back, when Mc Donald's sued a small town mom and pop sandwich shop with the same name. It turned out that the shop's owner's name was Mc Donald, and the shop had been in existence for many years before the hamburger joint ever made it into the UK (the hamburger joint lost).

The web is full of cases, where people using their birth name as their url, being suit as squatters by large corporate companies.

But I digress. There are many companies that use an apple in their logo. And, as it has been said before, the NewYork apple has been in existence from before Jobs was even born!

It would be a bit funny if this move ends up pissing off enough Newyorkers that they picket Apple's NYC store :)

That was me Jon :) But no problems... computers are straight from hell sometimes.

I just mentioned how unbelievably shallow Steve is to compare his stupid company with one of the world's biggest cities trying to do its bit for the planet.

Oh yes, and "consumer confusion resulting in damage and injury” to Apple" - how, exactly?

If some company is going to use a concept as commonplace as an apple in their logo, they shouldn't be surprised if other logos with apples turn up somewhere. They're not in the same business, the apples are different colours, the leaves point different ways, the number of stems is different, the number of bites is different, the texture-effect is different and only one of them incorporates a portmanteau symbol. Jobs' ire is a joke.

years ago apple computer was sued by the beatles’ apple label for stealing their name and using an apple as their logo.

the case took years and years. i think apple computer lost but was allowed to continue using the apple name and logo because it was a long-established name by the time the case ended.

i don’t recall if jobs’ apple had to pay any damages or royalties.
