p2pnet news | Crime:- Six girls from Lakeland, Florida, are accused of taping the “brutal beating” of another girl, aged 16, and threatening to post the video on YouTube and MySpace.
Two boys are accused of acting as lookouts, says the Ledger.
“The Internet played a central role in the motive behind the crime, two parents said,” according to a Ledger story posted last Sunday.
The mother of one of the suspects said the victim had, “provoked the teens by threatening and insulting them on MySpace,” while the girl’s father said the teens had been, “motivated by their desire to create a popular Internet video”.
All eight face kidnapping and battery charges, and three also are charged with witness tampering, says the Ledger today, quoting assistant state attorney Vince Patrucco as saying:
“They acted in concert and conspired to get this person where she was attacked. Everyone had a role in it. The attack was prolonged and egregious in nature.”
Bail on the kidnapping charges was set at $30,000 for each defendant, double the normal $15,000. Six received $1,000 bail on battery charges, and two, $5,000. Three defendants received $2,000 bail on witness tampering charges, says the story.
“I’m going to carry this as far as I can to see about getting this stuff off the internet and stop our children from endangering other people’s children just to create a shock video,” the victim’s father told local news channel WESH 2 News, says eSchoolNews.
The story is being widely reported including major items in the New York Times (right), FOXNews and Associated Press, among others.

They and two male classmates were charged as adults with battery and kidnapping in the March 30 attack in Lakeland, a lower-middle-class town in Central Florida. The girls’ sudden display of shame - like the order against talking to the news media that Judge Angela Cowden placed on local officials - could hardly offset the case’s mutation into a media juggernaut.
The beating left the16-year-old, a cheerleader, with a concussion and two black eyes.
“The combination of violence, girls, video and criticism of the Web seems to have made the case a magnet for attention and outrage,” says the NYT.

Me, I am shocked and I will be shocked whoever is the victim, black white asian it does not matter.
I have been into fights before myself but there is a code to be followed:
1) You don’t attack physically people that did not attack you physically.
2) You stop the attack on someone who is no longer defending himself.
3) You stop the attack when it is going to far.
4) You don’t kill people or inflict permanent injuries (unless someone else or your life is in danger.)

You don’t hear about other fights because they usually aren’t planned ambushes that are filmed with the intention of putting them on the internet. Also, the attackers usually don’t hold the victim against their will and threaten them with worse if they go to the police.
And no, the video wasn’t posted on the net until AFTER they were arrested and it was released by the police.
As for the girl who was attacked, you really can’t tell what she looks like on the video, since they obscured her face. I don’t understand that though, why obscure her face, but release her name? It’s not as if the media couldn’t easily get a photo of her if they wanted.
Personally, I hope they all get jail time for this.

While “girl fights” or physical fights among teens are not uncommon what people seem to be missing is that this was beyond just a typical fight that occurred in the heat of the moment. There was plenty of forethought to the beating, which was taken to a torturous level. The victim was held against her will, and beaten to the point of unconsciousness, and did not stop once the victims situation became critical. On top of that it was all intentionally caught on video. The girls turned the beating into some sort of subversive entertainment for themselves. The magnitude of the psychology behind that is what sets this case apart from other teenage fights. It also called for the involvement of 8 people against one. The girls involved utter lack of understanding of the severity of what they were doing to another human being is what makes this happening increasingly more disturbing.
I think this case is getting so much attention because so many people are wondering what drove 6 females, who by all appearances came from fairly stable middle class backgrounds, to reduce to such terrible torturous violence against another person with so little remorse. To have no conscious thought that what they were doing was as sick and horrible as it was.

Wow!!…… There are a lot of apparent previously emotionallly, scarred, individuals who responded to this in this column. We must first realize that these are children. Do you remember what it was like when you were a child. I have grown so much, mentally since my teenage years. At that time, someone talking trash, was unacceptable. That also was when people would head up fade. One on One, okay possibly two on one. Someone said there is a code of standards in a fight….WHAT? Everyone should know to start off there is no such thing as a fair fight. You don’t write down rules, you don’t talk about what your not going to do. Your emotions are in the way. The moment it begins it becomes a pissing contest on who is the best at whatever. This thing was out of hand by far. Guess what, this is not the only girl who had her preverbial butt handed to her. Difference, lack of you tube. That is why the dumb little girls got caught. Praise God for You Tube and stupid people. If it wasn’t for the both of them it would have taken longer to close the case. No question who did what. Now as for the penalty. Death? Life in prison? What? Are you guys insane? There is a fine line in the judicial system between reform and child abuse. THEY ARE STILL CHILDREN!! What ever happened to counciling them and those who surround them. Obviously something is wrong. I have never seen or heard of anything like this in my life. I’m 21 years old and I havent seen very many girl fights in my life because usually it never happened in school and it would NEVER happen in a home. I am really upset over this video, that those 2 girls would beat the other girl the way they did. They deserve all the punishment in the world.
In all honesty though this really does have to do with how these kids are raised and what kind of home life they live in. I was raised to where that is unheard of what those girls did. Totally unacceptable. If they were raised right then they wouldnt have done that. I am just disgusted with what happened. I hope those girls dont go anywhere for a long time because I’m sure there will be girls wanting to mess them up like they did that poor girl.
The parents should be ashamed. Don’t even try and make excuses. You obviously haven’t raised your children very well and now you and them are suffering from it. Heaven help those kids because they are lost.

According to reports, the victim in this case had “nowhere to stay” except the house at which she was attacked, which is why she went back inside even after the girls were cussing her and threatening her. This suggests that somewhere along the line this 17-year-old girl’s “parents” left her to fend for herself. Now the “father” of this girl wants to act like some agrieved parent who’s soooooo concerned for his daughter’s health and safety?????? Where the hell was this jerkoff when his daughter needed a place to stay???? Guess he wasn’t seeing the dollar signs of a huge lawsuit against the teens, their families, Youtube and everybody else that he’s seeing now, huh????!!!!Why isn’t he, or this girl’s mother, or whoever the hell was responsible for her, and left her “nowehere to stay” except with an obviously violent and twisted “friend,” not also being charged in this case???

Who ever wrote this has some nerve to say that the people who say this is a “black and white thing is stupid” because what you said kind of made you look a little racist{I’m talking about your 3rd statement about “black selves”, yeah you might want to reread it}. She might have been beaten by 6 other people, but that actually happens more often then you know. White, black, mexican, whatever, it doesn’t matter because all races do it. At first, my reaction was anger. The need to be there at the very moment to “stop my foot in their asses” came to mind. However, that would really accomplish anything….not to say it wouldn’t feel good
It gets even worse if I was the parent of the child that was beaten up. I think the parents had more composure over the situation than others would have. I would have snapped and possible hurt one of them. The main point of all this is where this type and kind of situation is going. if this has happened…makes me wonder how many others this has happened to. Not talking about them per say, but other people in other states or even countries. What if…this hadn’t been recorded? would we even know about this? one girls word versus 8? without the video evidence I think the 8 could have covered this up. The scary thing is what will happen next to be caught on video…12 girls on 1 or 12 on 2? they kill or tie someone up and torture? Let’s hope for everyone’s sake nothing shocking as this happens again.
