RIAA spent $3 million (almost) lobbying

p2pnet news | RIAA News:- Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony BMG’s RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) spent nearly $3 million whispering into ears, in 2007
It flashed out $2.1 million lobbying in the second half of 2007, according to the Senate’s public records office, says the Associated Press, and spent $659,000 on lobbying in the first half of the year, says the story, noting:
“Lobbyists are required to disclose activities that could influence members of the executive and legislative branches, under a federal law enacted in 1995.”
RIAA mouthperson-in-chief Mitch Bainwol, president Cary Sherman, and director of strategic communications Paige Ralston Fromer, “were among those working the halls of the Capitol,” says Ars Technica, going on:
“As a private trade group funded by the record labels, the RIAA’s budget is an unknown quantity, and it’s impossible to say what percentage of its budget the RIAA spends on lobbying (or P2P litigation, for that matter).”
As a matter of additional interest, “Bainwol raked in $1,472,944 in 2006,” p2pnet posted recently, adding for 2008, the figure need to be adjusted upwards, according to The Patry Copyright Blog..
It didn’t say what Sherman was paid, but was probably significantly more than Bainwol, we said.
In 2005, he (Sherman) took home “$1.13 million, but his boss, Bainwol, “received a trifling $908,848,” said p2pnet.
In 2003, Sherman took home $1 million.

The money spent lobbying on specific bills is only one head of the beast. The industry spends a lot more money on the process of putting politicians in office. The lobbying that takes place on copyright-enforcement bills is but a gentle reminder of who put them there to begin with.
