Ang Lee lashes out at Bill C-10

p2pnet news | Politics:- Is the pending Bill C-10 against freedom of speech, or for protecting the public?
It’s the latter, says Canadian heritage minister Josee Verner of the Harper government legislation which would stop tax credits being awarded to films whose content which could lead to prosecution under the Criminal Code, although foreign films made here wouldn’t be affected.
But it’s the former, says Oscar-winning Brokeback Mountain director Ang Lee.
Speaking to young film-makers in Vancouver, BC, yesterday, “People should be free to say anything,” the CBC has him saying. “The bill would have the effect of censoring films.”
He pointed out he wasn’t censored in making the film about gay cowboys, which was shot in Alberta, but, “Heritage Minister Josee Verner reacted to the speech by calling Lee’s statements ‘completely erroneous’.”
Not even Chinese authorities censored him, “during filming in the Communist-ruled country for his most recent film, Lust, Caution,” Lee says in the Globe and Mail.
“Lee, who also directed such celebrated films as Sense and Sensibility and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, is the highest-profile opponent so far to speak out against the bill, currently in hearings before a committee of the Senate,” says the story.

This is another ridiculous attempt to hide behind freedom of speech. “Freedom of Speech” does not equal “Freedom to Make Movies”.
Your freedom to say anything you want has nothing to do with taxes. Just because you choose an expensive media format to “express yourself”, that’s your decision. Live with it.
The Government (The People, supposedly) does not have any obligation to “adjust the financial investment (to your benefit)” required for you to say what you want on your chosen media outlet.
Choose a cheaper way to say what you want, or shut the hell up.
