China vies with US online

p2pnet news | Freedom:- China has now overtaken the US in terms of the number of people online.
The number of surfers has reached 221 million, says Xinhua.
The figure was 210 million by the end of last year, trailing the US by some five million, figures issued by the China Internet Network Information Centre showed, says the story.
In terms of penetration, only 16% of the Chinese population was online by the end of 2007, compared to 19.1% of the world average, it states.
Statistics produced byNielsen/NetRatings say rather than China being in the lead, the two countries are neck and neck, but, “The U.S. growth rate is lower, suggesting that when March figures for China are released they may show that the country has already overtaken the United States,” says the Detroit Free Press, going on:
“Some 75% of American adults already are online, and the rate for teenagers is even higher, according to the U.S.-based Pew Internet and American Life Project.
“By contrast, BDA’s Clark said China’s Web population should keep growing by 18% annually, reaching 490 million by 2012 - a number larger than the entire U.S. population.”
