Yoko Ono ‘Intelligent Design’ row

p2pnet news | Movies:-Yoko Ono wants ‘Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed,’ a pro-intelligent design documentary featuring the famous John Lennon song Imagine, banned from being shown publicly.
She and her sons, Sean and Julian, have filed a legal action in Manhattan, says the BBC.
It’s a documentary dealing with, “academic and scientific discrimination from Darwinists against intelligent designers,” says AntiMusic.com, going on:
“The filmmakers claim that the fair use doctrine comes into play since they were using the Lennon track for commentary.”
In a statement, they say they’re disappointed therefore that Yoko Ono and others have decided to challenge our free speech right to comment on the song ‘Imagine’ in our documentary film,” according to the story.
The documentary made history this weekend, “as it propelled full speed into the top 10 box office,” says the Christian Post, going on:
“It opened as the widest and one of the most commercially successful releases for any documentary film.
“In an impressive opening weekend, the film debuted at No. 9 at the box office, earning a respectable $3.2 million while only appearing on 1,052 screens.”
Ono said the film gave the impression she approved the song’s use, leading to accusations that she was “selling out,” says the BBC.

I’ve really lost any respect I had for Ben Stein over this movie. I’m a Christian, and I find it ridiculous that science and religion cannot co-exist. This attitude of “just because the Bible didn’t mention dinosaurs or cavemen, they must not exist and all those fossils are fakes made in a labratory somewhere, and scientists that say so are waging a war against God” really stinks. We actually had a front-runner candidate for President (for awhile) who has stated that he believes that the world is only approx. 6,000 years old, based not on hard science, but his knowledge gained from reading the Bible. Scary.
Well, guess what. God gave scientists the intelligence to find out why, when, and how things happen in this world.
As for evolution, I don’t know if these people just don’t like the notion that man may or may not have evolved from apes, or the whole idea in general. Evolution exists all around us every day, in terms that we all know and can see: the strong survive, and those who can’t feed or fend for themselves slowly die out. Man has managed to put a stop to this process by creating a world in which (it is possible that) even the weakest and most sickly can survive. However, in the animal world, this is a rule of life. This is what Charles Darwin was witness to.

That comment isn’t exactly relevant to the article, but I tend to agree. Of course, now you’ll have people coming here and posting all sorts of anti-Christian remarks, because Christians are the one group it’s okay to direct hate speech against (not saying you are, of course, previous commenter).

Knowing that the We of an Intelligent Mind Soul, are Beings of a ‘’Complex Designed Circuitry of Intelligent Energy’ .. and knowing that Soul is that ghost-like Energy which engulfs the Mind at all times …. and knowing that the Spirit is but the accelerated state of any energy … I am comfortable rooted in the knowledge that we were brought into existence by the Master Creator … One who did create and do hold firm the very Designed Foundation of all Worlds created … that same One who sit in Highest position of all Her Creations of 9 Universal Planes; added to this, each upper and lower Planes Inner 4 Dimensional Levels …. One who is said, if Her Voltage Form of Lightening were to step down from Her hidden Place there in the First Dimensional Level of the First Universal Plane …. And were to take journey through our known universe of expanded darkness … Her appearance would stand as a Five Figurative Form of Blue Lightening, taller than any known Nebula …. and that spiraling galaxies would be as tiny lily pads coupling each Her every gigantic Footsteps …. and that each lily pad of a galaxy, would buckle to fall in scattered debris at Her passing … So Knowing what I am sure of … there is no need to debate rather or not the We of Intelligent Mind Souls were Designed or a mishap of evolutionized procedures of natural developments … I stand In full knowledge of my Creator … I am just an Old Sold passing through, with something important to say ….… SoD …15806 Winding Moss-B …Houston Texas … 77068 …. 281-4401918 …. Yeah, sorry to get off-topic. Hopefully there won’t be a lot of anti-Christian stuff posted, because that isn’t what I’m saying at all.
So, closer to the point, I wonder how “Imagine” is used in this film. It seems to me that the lyrics don’t exactly support the filmmakers POV. I wouldn’t think that they could use it without permission.

I would have guessed that Stein would be arguing against the point of the song. “No religion, too” and all that. Stein would see the exclusion of ID from schools or scholarly debate as an example of the rise of the purely secular society that Lenon sang of. He’d be wrong, I think, for the most part, but I would guess that’d be his point of using the song.
The whole copyright thing really has become quite a farce, though, hasn’t it? It seems to me that creativity was more abundant before all the nonsensical strictures of modern copyright law. What was a medieval writer without his “auctor”? But today Chaucer would have been sued six ways to Sunday.

bah- “…Christians are the one group it’s okay to direct hate speech against…”
There is a lot of Christian bashing out there. I’ll grant you that. I have read just as many “anti-evolution” posts by so-called Christians that are every bit as hate filled. BTW-The poor and homeless are the favorite new-kid-on-the-block target for hate crime. And I’m not talking about internet posts. Homeless people are being beaten, sometimes to death. Kinda puts getting your feelings hurt by a harsh blog post in perspective… I’m with Bueller? Frye? Brains? who says, “…I find it ridiculous that science and religion cannot co-exist.” For me it is difficult to suffer fools gladly, and when it comes to the anti-science/”dismiss the general consensus” crowds (not just Christians) some of the stuff people say sounds pretty damn foolish.
.
As for Yoko et al, it would appear that it’s all about the money. FTA-”Ono, Sean and Julian Lennon and EMI Blackwood Music Inc are also seeking financial damages.”

I’m with you about there being plenty of bigoted and stupid “Christians” out there, and I’m with you about protecting the poor and homeless. However, hate speech is hate speech, and what would get people up in arms if said about one group will go without notice if it’s said about Christians. You know, you start ostracizing a people and next thing you know, they’re in the gas chambers. Overreaction? Only time will tell, but certainly the rules ought to apply to all groups if to any.
“all about the money” Sadly, isn’t it always?

The term “Survival of the fittest” was not a term coined by Charles Darwin. This term was coined British economist Herbert Spencer. The correct phrase is natural selection. There are Christians that believe that they theory of evolution conflicts with there religious views, this can be said about some people who follow other religions.
It is very understandable that Yoko Ono and John Lennon two son’s have an issue with the use of a John Lennon song in the movie. Ben Stein will complain, however the law on not on his side on this issue. Ben Stein claims that they have fair use, however the usage of the song in question was not use under the condition for fair use. Ben Stein is not critiquing “Imagine”, but critiquing evolution.
The theory of evolution has influence theories in various scientific and humanitarian fields. It has influenced how we view languages have developed. How disease works, such as the flu. This include history. What is quiet interesting in how much the ‘Watch makers” theory and creationism has evolved over time. It can be argued that Creationism and Intelligent Design are not the same, but that is not the issue.
A little off topic. Anti-Christian? Both American and Canada are Christian nations, where for example American are 80% Christian. It must be understood that a vast majority of Christian believe in the theory of evolution. The majority of Christians who don’t, do so because they do not understand the theory. In other words they have been given miss information on the sphere of ‘evolution’ and what the actual theory says.

Yeh I tried acid too.

I agree there are the vast majority of confused and disillusioned so-called Christians out there, however there are a growing number of scientists and other luminaries who are embracing the concept of Intelligent Design.
If you have a wonderful piece of software with billions of bits of code, who would be so foolish as to claim it had no creator, as they didn’t see it happen, and it just created itself? Well it’s exactly the same with the DNA strands of life, which perform amazing functions and are impossible to even begin artificially copying. Just to map them out is a huge enough job.
The complexities of simple sugars are mind boggling.

Seems foolish to me to believe that something that’s been made once cannot possibly be made again.
