‘Scud Stud’ sues over Charlie Wilson’s War

p2pnet news | Movies:- Canadian TV journalist Arthur Kent, dubbed the “Scud Stud” for his coverage of the 1991 Gulf War for NBC, “is suing the makers of the movie Charlie Wilson’s War for unauthorized use of his voice-over and footage in the film’s depiction of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan,” says the Montreal Gazette.

Kent, born in Aberta, is accusing Universal Studios “and other production companies” for, ironically, copyright infringement, it goes on.

We say ‘ironically’ because Universal is one of the major Hollywood studios that’s spending millions of dollars over alleged copyright infringement by others, including file sharers.

Kent is also suing the studio for, “distortion of Kent’s footage and voice-over from a report which aired on the BBC in 1986,” the story adds.

‘Scud Stud,’ “produced a 10-minute documentary for the BBC program Newsnight, which detailed his time spent with Afghan mujahedeen in the northeastern mountains of Afghanistan during their conflict with the Soviets,” says the Globe and Mail.

“Segments from the documentary, including images and narration produced by Mr. Kent, appeared in Charlie Wilson’s War without his permission, according to the filing.”

Kent, “worked at NBC as a foreign correspondent and host of Dateline NBC from 1989 to 1992,” says the Wikipedia going on:

“After a contract dispute with NBC, he was fired in August 1992. He subsequently sued NBC for breach of contract, fraud, and defamation, a case that was settled in March 1994. Under the terms of the agreement, NBC paid Kent an undisclosed amount, and retracted prior statements about Kent and the dispute.

“Kent also won the right to publish testimony and evidence from the discovery phase of the suit in his book, Risk and Redemption: Surviving The Network News Wars. He subsequently returned to Canada to host the CBC’s Man Alive. He also established his own film company, Fast Forward Films, in Britain.”

He’s asking for unspecified damages and an injunction stopping the distribution of the Tom Hanks film, according to his lawyers.
