"Speaking of running people over, anyone old enough to remember one of the first controversial video games, Death Race 2000?"

Death Race 2000 was a 1975 movie starring David Carradine and Sylvestor Stallone.

I think you mean Carmageddon, although it was inspired by Death Race 2000. :)

I enjoyed GTA2 in multi-player mode. Pity it was so tempermental. (I had to switch to 16-bit color and sacrifice a goat to keep it from crashing when I clicked "start game" in multiplayer mode)

Maybe I'll try writing a clone of it some day.

I haven't played any of the GTA games, however the concept does appeal to me. Not so much for the violence but for the freedom to go anywhere and do anything you want. I don't have any of the consoles and my current system won't even run GTA San Andreas, so I can't play it, however the GTA4 screenshots and gameplay videos I've see look amazing. I'd love to be able to explore an entire virtual city.

I was looking forward to doing just that with Spider-Man 2, until the idiots at Activision butchered the Windows version and turned it into a kiddy game.

Personally, while the violence appeals to some, I think it's the freedom more than anything. I mean, how many people would play it if the play area was restricted to just one block and all you did was run around killing an endless supply of civilians and cops. I'd be willing to bet that most people would get bored with it after about five minutes.

.. so... let me preface this by saying. I dislike the GTA series.. I enjoyed the first one... but by the time GTA3 came out I was rather bored... and have no intention of investing time and money into this game..

Ill be the first to admit, that its excessively violent, and is full of sex, drugs, and crooked cops... just like real life..

let me just say.. what do you mean by "game" why the quotes?

its a game, you may not like the content, but it doesnt make it less of a game.

and linking enjoying GTA to enjoying watching human beings duel to the death is just sad..... The day playing a game is equivalent to taking pleasure in watching my fellow men kill eachother is the day I dont want to be considered part of this "human" race.

*sigh*...

This game is popular, in part cus of the violence.. (then again, thats also why the army and most of tv and movies are popular) the other part is that it gives the player an immersive world that he is able to interact with. A world which people like to play with... options are why this game is so popular......

Now you know.

And this is bad because? If I go home from a bad day at work, and start playing Crysis, where I am shooting people in the head at close range, am I going to turn violent? I don't think so. What about tv today, the stuff on major U.S. channels like ABS, CBS, NBC, Fox, etc. You can watch people being cut open on House or Dexter, where you can see people cut open or bleeding all over the place, not interested in the violence? Check out the cheating and Sex on: Nip/Tuck and Desperate Housewives, maybe you are more interested in gang activity? Flip over to Sopranos. There isn't anything in this game that isn't already in front of our face that we record once a week on our DVR's and look forward to watching.

Let me head off all the people screaming about the kids thing.

It's rated 17+, like NC-17 movies, if you don't' want your kids to watch it/play, don't' let them. Pretty simple people.
