China jails 2 for life after Tibet protests

p2pnet news | Freedom:- China’s foreign ministry spokeswoman, Jiang Yu, says the government hopes the Dalai Lama and his followers will “cherish” the opportunity for contact and consultation with the relevant department of the central government, “and stop secessionist activities or those that involve disrupting the Beijing Olympics”.

In the background, a Chinese court has jailed six monks and 24 others for three years to life following the Tibet protests.

Two men, including a Buddhist monk identified as Basang, received life sentences, according to state agency Xinhua, quoted by the Wall Street Journal.

Basang led 10 people, including five other monks, “to destroy local government offices, burn down shops and attack policemen, Xinhua said,” according to the story.

“We hope the Dalai Lama and his followers will cherish this opportunity, recognize the situation, change their position, and take concrete actions to stop violent crimes and activities and those involving disruption of the Beijing Olympics and splitting the motherland, to create conditions for further consultation,” Jiang stated, said Xinhua.

Meanwhile, the number of people killed in a Chinese crackdown on protests and unrest in Tibet has risen by around 50 to 203, the Tibetan government-in-exile said Tuesday, says Agence France-Presse, going on:

“Some 1,000 people had been hurt and 5,715 arrested since the demonstrations began on March 10, according to figures which the government based in the northern Indian town of Dharamshala said had been extensively cross-checked.

Peaceful Tibetan protestors were “provoked” by the Chinese forces into committing acts of violence, a spokesman for the government-in-exile told a news conference, adding, “Chinese-planted agents themselves started the riots that left some Chinese dead.”

I somehow doubt a monk led people to burn down buildings.

  3. bah Says:

Guess you don’t know those monks, then.

Regardless, why are we letting China host the Olympics? Horrible place.
