In case you miss it all, 15-year-old Disney TV money machine Miley Cyrus, aka Hannah Montana, did a photo shoot for Vanity Fair.

She was wrapped only in a bed sheet and her dad, country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, claims he didn’t know that’s what celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz was up to.

That parents who are now protesting Cyrus’s pose have not been concerned about what she has been projecting and promoting to date – rampant consumerism through the idea that girls should be all about their looks and clothes – is what is really disturbing.

In fact, the rest of the Vanity Fair layout is what should be attracting their ire.

Not only does she wear a cut-to-whoops and hiked-to-OMG Balmain dress, there is a particularly creeptacular photo of Cyrus lounging up against her father, the one-hit country music wonder Billy Ray. He denies being on set when the girl-in-a-sheet shot was taken – although other minders were present – but he makes no apology for posing like a dirty uncle with her.

Which he does all the time.

But then, Cyrus’s trashy parents – who have spawned a number of children through various adulterous relationships – do the God talk thing a lot, which seems to give them a pass in the more conservative quarters of the U.S. of A.

Bad, bad Miley Cyrus. At 15, she should have had the wisdom of a 47-year-old like, for example, her father, Billy Ray Cyrus.

Because then his better judgment would surely have clicked in and she would not have posed for those pics for Vanity Fair.

For most of us, when we think back on some of the stuff we pulled off at 15, we shudder and look skyward to thank the heavens our parents never found out.

Occasionally, years later, we tell our parents only to have Mom nod and say: “I know, I was keeping an eye on you to make sure you didn’t get into too much trouble!”

But Miley’s dad, Billy, was right there at the Vanity Fair photo shoot and he participated. All 47 years of him.

The young woman in the red polka-dot dress took a good, close look at the picture. “I don’t think it’s that bad,” she said. “It’s supposed to be arty. And Vanity Fair’s not supposed to be aimed in children’s direction.” Her facial expression wasn’t suggestive, she pointed out. “She looks like a young girl. It’s not a sexy picture.”

Ms. Leibovitz, in responding to criticism, expressed much the same sentiments, adding, by way of apology, “I am sorry that my image of Miley has been misinterpreted.”

Let’s face it, there are only so many ways to interpret an image of a young girl, half-nude, wrapped in a sheet; but in some ways, the image is, in fact, more innocent than, say, the shots of Ms. Cyrus that circulated on YouTube just a few days before the Vanity Fair story broke. The look on her face in those YouTube shots – an almost practiced wide-eyed blankness, familiar to anyone who’s watched 20 minutes of female background dancers on MTV – is what’s depressingly suggestive of pornography, more than the green bra or bare belly she exposes.

The girl in the baby-T wanted to make it patently clear that she didn’t care about Ms. Cyrus. But she did care that the image embodied the way she and her friends, and even more so, girls younger than herself, were being forced to grow up so fast.

“It’s like you only get so many years to be a child, and then once you’re an adult, you’re an adult for, like, 100 years,” she said. “That’s it. Welcome to adulthood. There’s no turning back.”

So what about the Red Carpet event?

Well, “Miley Cyrus made an appearance at Disney World, but won’t be sticking around long enough for the media to join her,” says AP.

She won’t be at today’s “red carpet event”.

“It would have been her first public event since Vanity Fair published photos this week that have thrown her status as a role model for young girls into question,” says Walt Disney World spokesman Gary Buchanan.
