Billions spent on UK spy-cams ‘wasted’

p2pnet news | Freedom:- The billions of pounds spent covering Britain with closed circuit spy cameras has been an “utter fiasco” says Scotland Yard’s surveillance chief.
Quoted in the Daily Mail, detective chief inspector Mick Neville says a Metropolitan Police pilot project found only 3% of street robberies in London were solved using CCTV images.
The “vast swathes of money spent on cameras” had been wasted because, “criminals don’t fear the cameras,” says the story, going on:
“But Mr Neville also castigated the police and claimed officers can’t be bothered to seek out CCTV images because it’s ‘hard work’.”
However, Greater Manchester Police assistant chief constable David Thompson doesn’t agree.
He thinks CCTV, “is effective and has played an important role in reducing crime,” says the Manchester Evening News.
“We work in partnership with councils in using CCTV systems for a range of functions,” he says in the story.
“These include monitoring the build up of crowds that could lead to public disorder, the gathering of intelligence on criminal activity, the targeting and location of individuals and groups after a crime has occurred and the effective deployment of policing resources.”

“the gathering of intelligence on criminal activity”
Really? You sure it doesn’t just displace crime to areas that aren’t surveilled? If I had criminal intent I wouldn’t do it on the High Street.
If Scotland Yard are using phrases like “utter fiasco” then I’m more inclined to believe their figures than the hyperbole of a shiny-arse eating donuts protecting their own self-interests.

Well, no big news here. That’s an issue that has been well raised in the insightful documentary “EVERY STEP YOU TAKE” last year already.
There is clearly something wrong in this country.
Only watching the film’s trailer at http://www.EveryStepYouTake.org sends you shivers down your bones …

I’m surprised that people don’t stage fake crimes, like pretending to stab someone, just to get the police to chase their tails. If they actually do find the people responsible, they can always claim they were just fooling around.
