Lesbos isn’t gay, say Greek islanders

p2pnet news | Cool Stuff:- “Lesbos (Greek: ??????, also transliterated Lesvos) is a Greek island located in the northeastern Aegean Sea,” says the Wikipdia. “It has an area of 1,630 km² (630 square miles) with 320 kilometres (almost 200 miles) of coastline, making it the third largest Greek island and the largest of the numerous Greek islands scattered in the Aegean.”
Not only but also, “The word lesbian is derived from the poems of Sappho, born in Lesbos, which contain powerful emotional content directed toward other females and have frequently been interpreted as expressing homosexual love. Because of this association, Lesbos and especially the town of Eresos, her birthplace, are visited frequently by lesbian tourists.”
And that apparently has some islanders up in arms.
“Campaigners on the Greek island of Lesbos are to go to court in an attempt to stop a gay rights organisation from using the term ‘lesbian’,” says the BBC.
And if they’re successful, it wont’ end there because islanders say that if they’re successful, “they may then start to fight the word lesbian internationally,” says the story.
Paradoxically, a man is spearheading the case.
Publisher Dimitris Lambrou claims “international dominance of the word in its sexual context” violates the human rights of the islanders, and “disgraces them around the world,” says the Beeb, adding:
“In court papers, the plaintiffs allege that the Greek government is so embarrassed by the term Lesbian that it has been forced to rename the island after its capital, Mytilini.
“An early court date has now been set for judges to decide whether to grant an injunction against the Homosexual and Lesbian Community of Greece and to order it to change its name.”
Rumours that Lambrou and the offended islanders are also considering action against the makers of homogenised milk, better known as homo milk, should perhaps be taken lightly.

lol
I wonder what they will come up with as a replacement name

Anything they’ll come up with will derive itself from another word, over which someone out there will be sure to complain about. And if it’s not derived from another word, i.e. it’s etymology is complete nonsense, then lesbians will complain about having their collective term being derived from nonsense.

The island has perennial fame through the odyssey of homer, why would they be ashamed of this?

“Uranus is greek as well”
That is the latinised version of the name. Οὐρανός is the greek name.
