Windows Media Player 10

p2pnet.net News:- Microsoft is touting a beta of its video and audio Windows Media Player 10. But this time, it can channel music store ‘product’ straight into your house.

The current WMP 9 is locked solid into systems – whether you want it or not.

It’s “like a bad houseguest,” as ZDNet puts it here. “It just won’t leave.”

Imagine the various plastic music sites supplied and supported by the Big Five labels as bad houseguests with direct access to your computer via the ‘Digital Media Mall’.

“These stores enjoy deeper integration and customization within the Player to enhance their functionality and ease of use,” says Microsoft.

Deeper integration. Enhance their functionality.

hmmmm

The beta comes with a warning that includes the statement: “You might encounter problems with this release of the software that could possibly result in a loss or destruction of data. This release is not for production use, and we suggest that you run the software in a test environment or back up your existing data, including music and video files, before you install and run the software on your computer.”

I have been testing WMP 10 in various beta stages and think it is a great improvement on WMP9.

I have a review of the current WMP 10 Beta up at:

    “A great improvement on WMP9″

(Well, lets look at it this way: it couldnt get much worse)

lol, no doubt…on my one windozer machine I still have v6.4, just install the codecs (which are buried on MS’s site).

I wouldn’t use it personally. I have far too many others (6 of them) that do what Windows Media Player does, plus more and I don’t have to worry about being invaded by software that I don’t want.

  5. Reader's Write Says:

I use wmp9 as my main media player because the sound quality is better than anything else (I’ve tried them all). Hopefully wmp10 is an improvement, but to be honest I can’t think of anything I’d do to improve wmp9… those of you who are flaming it I wish you would elaborate.

  6. Reader's Write Says:

Microsoft’s two-headed Janus DRM technology is ready for prime time and the software giant has wasted no time integrating it into a revamped version of its flagship Windows Media Player (WMP).

Janus, which marries Windows Media DRM for Portable Devices and Windows Media DRM for Network Devices, is a key addition to the new WMP 10, which was released as a technical beta on Wednesday.

With the integration of Janus to the revamped WMP 10, Microsoft (Quote, Chart) has added support for premium, DRM-protected content on a range of portable devices.

It’s DRM’d up the whazoo for starters, second its MS, third it phones home non-stop and most likely will catalogue your media so MS can better serve you ;) , third its MS,

fourth MS sees the fact that the OS mkt long term is a lost cause , they’ll delay it as long as possible though so they can establish (dominate) themselves in a new mkt, Apple will most likely be their next anti-competitve target…msPod anyone…Portable Media Center??
