RIM launches BlackBerry Bold smartphone

p2pnet news | Mobiles:- Canada’s RIM has stolen a march on Apple’s iPhone.

Its new BlackBerry Bold 9000 supports 3G worldwide, as well as Wi-Fi and GPS.

But without going into detail, “Certain music files may not be supported, including files that contain digital rights management technologies,” it says.

The Bold smartphone’s support for tri-band HSDPA and enterprise-grade Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g) networks and its next-generation 624 MHz mobile processor make short work of downloading email attachments, streaming video or rendering web pages, says RIM.

It includes 128 MB Flash memory plus 1 GB on-board storage memory, as well as and a microSD/SDHC memory card slot accessible from a side door.

MicroSD/SDHC memory cards are available today in configurations of up to 8GB and the BlackBerry Bold is expected to support upcoming 16GB microSD/SDHC cards, says the company.

“A major weakness with BlackBerry devices has been the web browser, but the press release states that this new browswer will support full desktop-style HTML and also allow streaming via RTSP - real-time streaming protocol,” says ZDNet, noting it features a 2-megapixel camera with integrated flash.”

According to TheBoyGenius, it’ll come in at $300 to $500 from AT&T “this summer”.

The story says the Bond also features

  • Interchangable color back plates.
  • 5 hours of talk time, 13 days of standby time.
  • 624-MHz Marvell Tavor PXA930 processor.

The redesigned keyboard, “has guitar-inspired frets - thin metal strips - between each row,” says PC World, going on the keys themselves are sculpted to help users avoid fingertip slippage, going on:

“Of course, little commercial video content is available as yet for non-Apple media players. Further, the Bold’s screen is diminutive compared to the current iPhone’s roomy 3.5-inch display, and it isn’t a touch screen. (RIM president and co-CEO Mike Lazaridis simply smiled when we asked about reports that the company is working on a touch-screen BlackBerry).

“But since the Bold’s smaller display holds the same number of pixels as the current iPhone’s, images look much higher-res on it than on its competitor.”

Knowing Rogers it’ll be $500 with a 3 year ball and chain, $700 without.

  2. B_Easy24 Says:

Ha I’m not impressed! cause it still won’t be able to compete with Palm, and the the current Treo currently does what the nex-gen Blackberry Bold will be able to do.

In April Vringo (the company I work for) announced a new Facebook application that lets you easily see your friends’ pictures every time they call, creating a unique type of “visual caller ID.” The application is free to download from Facebook and will be available worldwide for all BB device. just take a look. After installing the facebook app you should go to: http://get.vringo.com on your blackberry browser to complete the set up process.

I have had my hands on the Blackberry Bold and it fits nicely into the hand. I think you will all find it a lot thinner then it looks in the photos, I work for vodafone myself and have been holding out for a new smart photo, Form me it was between the Samsung i900 and the Bold. We got the i90o the other day and as good as it looks and its spec kida matches the bold. The Windows OS and slowed it rite down. Yes the i900 has the 5mp camera but you can only open the cam applications once everything else is shut down otherwise it does not have enough system memory. As always Windows Mobile’s ways of making it hard to shut down applications have spoilt i good looking high spec device. The blackberry bold has the capability to open and edit Microsoft Documents while running the BB OS that we all know it quick. BB virgins should not be put off by using a different OS as this is fantastic and after a few days you will never go back. The Bold should be in Vodafone stores on 4th September.
