May 27 confirmed for Net Neutrality rally

p2pnet news | Freedom:- Here’s what we want to see on May 27 >>>>>>>>

Because it’s now confirmed that’s the date Canadians will rally at Parliament Hill in Ottawa to make their feelings about Net neutrality and broadband throttling known to their elected representatives.

The major ISPs are already in effect censoring their customers by deliberately blocking access, and now the Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic (CIPPIC) has filed a complaint with Canada’s Privacy Commissioner about Bell Canada’s alleged practice of spying on customers‘ online activities without their knowledge or consent.

Bell began applying deep packet inspection to its Sympatico retail customers late in October 2007, “but only admitted this practice late in March 2008, after it began applying the same practice to subscribers of other, independent internet service providers,” says CIPPIC.

Bell claims it’s respecting the privacy of ISP subscribers, but it’s refused to describe just what its deep packet inspection of subscribers’ activities really uncovers, says clinic executive director Philippa Lawson.

Make your thoughts and feelings known

Moves to block Net neutrality, deep packet inspection and traffic shaping are part and parcel of plans by Bell, et al, to control what you do, and how and when you do it.

So be one of the crowd of people who’ll let industry minister Jim Prentice know it isn’t going to happen.

And if you’re thinking it’ll be a waste of time,” think again. A crowd of people confronting Prentice in Calgary helped force him to back-track on tabling a Canadian DMCA.

Parliament coordinators say they need an idea of how many people will be there, so anyone planning on adding their strength is asked to register here.

Rally organisers are also putting together pick-up locations to get supporters to and from the event. If think you’ll need a ride, please click here.

They expect transport to cost about $20 per person.

If you can’t be there it, you can still make your thoughts and feelings known.

Minister Prentice,

I am deeply concerned about Bell Canada’s recent announcement that it will make its practice of throttling official starting April 7.

Canada does not have strict enforceable net neutrality legislation and so there is very little structure in place to prevent the big ISPs from discriminating by speeding up or slowing down Web content based on its source, ownership or destination.

I am outraged that Canada does not have a policy to protect my ability to communicate and access information freely on the Internet and urge you to take action on this matter immediately.

Sincerely,

Make May 27 a day no one, especially Jim Pentice and the ISPs, will forget.

Wow, fun stuff. Looks like it could be a “Tech Woodstock”.

Too bad I’m all the way down here in California, or I’d go.

The Canadian government would prob just be annoyed that some goofy American thought they had a right to tell other governments how to do things….

But, supporting freedom is everyones right, and obligation, regardless of what country you belong to.
