Phoenix Mars Lander blog

p2pnet news | P2P:- Reduced to its barest, the continuation of the search for life on Mars looks so dry:

Cruise Stage Separation - 23:39:17 - 16:39:17
Turn-to-Entry - 23:39:47 - 16:39:47
Entry - 23:46:17 - 16:46:17
Nominal Plasma Black out start - 23:47:05 - 16:47:05
Nominal Plasma Black out end - 23:49:05 - 16:49:05
Nominal Heatshield Deployment - 23:50:12 - 16:50:12
Nominal Lander Leg Deployment - 23:50:22 - 16:50:22
Nominal Lander Separation - 23:52:50 - 16:52:50
Nominal Touch Down - 23:53:33 - 16:53:33

Amplified, on May 25, excitedly, “Touchdown detected!! We’re on the surface of Mars and there is celebration in Mission Control!!”

Expanded as a statement for the media: “Radio signals received at 4:53:44 p.m. Pacific Time (7:53:44 p.m. Eastern Time) confirmed that the Phoenix Mars Lander had survived its difficult final descent and touchdown 15 minutes earlier … The confirmation ignited cheers by mission team members at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.; Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Denver; and the University of Arizona.”

The caption to the pic on the right reads: >>>

This image shows a polygonal pattern in the ground near NASA’s Phoenix Mars Lander, similar in appearance to icy ground in the arctic regions of Earth.

“Phoenix touched down on the Red Planet at 4:53 p.m. Pacific Time (7:53 p.m. Eastern Time), May 25, 2008, in an arctic region called Vastitas Borealis, at 68 degrees north latitude, 234 degrees east longitude.

This is an approximate-color image taken shortly after landing by the spacecraft’s Surface Stereo Imager, inferred from two color filters, a violet, 450-nanometer filter and an infrared, 750-nanometer filter.

The Phoenix Mission goals are >>>

  • Determine whether Life ever arose on Mars
  • Characterize the Climate of Mars
  • Characterize the Geology of Mars
  • Prepare for Human Exploration

Exciting, and almost as interesting is the fact NASA decided to run what it called a Landing Blog posted by the mission team throughout the days leading up to the landing.

The last entry comes on May 25 and the countdown clock on the site as we post this says, simply, the craft has now been on Mars for 11 hours, 12 minutes and 37 seconds.

And counting …………

11 hours, 12 minutes and 13 seconds? Wow! If it moves at the pace of NASA’s previous Mars missions, that’s probably enough time for it to have moved an entire foot!

  2. Thomas Lee Elifritz Says:

The lander doesn’t move, it’s a lander, not a rover, get it?

  3. EE Says:

    I don’t see anyone else exploring Mars…

  4. Rekrul Says:

“The lander doesn’t move, it’s a lander, not a rover, get it?”

Oops, I haven’t been following the story and I assumed that they would have included a rover on the lander.

  5. WIL EDISON Says:

WHAT ARE THE SPECS TO THE ATMOSPERE… BET KNOW ONE WILL EVER KNOW OR THINK TO ASK

  6. WIL EDISON Says:

WHAT ARE THE READINGS COME ON PEOPLE…. OXYGEN, NO2 CO2 hey CO2 and sunlight make Oxygen no oxygen they said at all in 76.. now theres water…Hydrogen plus what makes water????? CLOUDS???

  7. WIL EDISON Says:

COME ON THEY SHOULD BE TELLING YOU SOLID SPECS FOR ENVIROMENT… theree is 82% nitrogen… WHATS MARS MOON HAS ALL THE NITROGEN BUT NOT MARS??????????????? YOU BUYING THIS CRAP

  8. WIL EDISON Says:

THIS IS CRAP…… LIES LIES LIES FORGET THE GOVERNMENT EVERYONE ELSE IS THE CONSPIRICY

  9. WIL EDISON Says:

NO ONE WILL EVER TELL YOU THE SPECS ON MAR ATMOSPHERE…. NEVER WILL YOU GET A STRIGHT ANSWER
    FROM NASA…. I CHALLANGE EVERYONE!!!

  10. WIL EDISON Says:

Bet NOONE WILL ANSWER MY COMMENT!

When we first went to the moon, we discovered it to be full of plain dirt and rocks. It was brought back to earth and the scientists analyzed it at length and confirmed that yes, it really is dirt and rocks. Of course we weren’t convinced so, we had to go another dozen times or so to convince ourselves that it was full of dirt and rocks.

When we first went to Mars, our probes took flyby photos of the planet and guess what,? hmmm … it looks like more dirt and rocks but we weren’t convinced so we sent the first Rover to land there. It took many photos and studied the soil and radioed back to earth that Mars if full of dirt and rocks. Ok, so that wasn’t enough so we send the Phoenix. This time it sent us beautiful pictures of a Martian landscape full of … dirt and rocks. But wait, this is different. The Phoenix landed near the North Pole. It began to intimately analyze the soil and it made the amazing discovery that yes, it’s still dirt and rocks. But wait, this is different. The dirt has a pattern to it. Hmmm … I see.

  12. WIL EDISON Says:

YES A PATTERN OF YOU NOT ANSWERING WHAT ARE THE SPECS TO THE ATMOSPHERE THERE……lol

  13. WIL EDISON Says:

WHAT ARE THE OFFICAL READINGS OF MARS ATMOSPHERE AS OF may 27 2008???? A 250 MILLION DOLLARS LANDER HAS AT LEAST A $13 Oxygen SENSOR from a honda civic at least right? COME ON, WHAT ARE THE OFFICAL READINGS OF ATMOSPHERE FOR MARS?

  14. WIL EDISON Says:

WHAT ARE THE OFFICAL READINGS FOR MARS ATMOSPHERE???/ WHAT +WHAT+ WHAT = 100% WHAT ARE THE OFFICAL READINGS? 205 million dollar lander should at LEAST HAVE A $13 PEP BOYS OXYGEN SENSOR FOR A HONDA CIVIC ON BOARD !!!! RIGHT !!!!

  15. WIL EDISON Says:

YOU ALL HAVE TO WAKE UP. I CANT BELIEVE IM THE ONLY PERSON ASKING FOR THE OFFICAL ATMOSPHERE READINGS FOR MARS PHOENIX LANDER. WHAT + WHAT+WHAT = 100% see, THEY WILL NEVER TELL YOU WHAT IT IS… what THEY will say later is that they only have one sensor on board. NO…FLAT OUT LIE… see, it’s easier to LIE about one sensor insted of four. THEY HAVE ALL THE BASIC sensors on board… look at some of the pictures CLOUDS in the SKY???? IS THAT A STREAM OF WATER I SEE??????? oh my god and they are pictures from the NASA WEB SITE… A $250 million dollar should at LEAST HAVE A $13 PEP BOYS OXYGEN SENSOR FOR A HONDA CIVIC ON BOARD !!!! RIGHT !!!! and believe me….it does….

  16. WIL EDISON Says:

Is there any Oxygen on Mars ? CO2? how much CO2? lol come on … these are valid questions!
Well?……… I’m Waiting!!!!!…. Wow, I do see Frost on the Ground … far away from the landers arm
Guess they should have sent a rover huh. I see that rock in the photo… Clearly CO2 frost. too bad the lander arm cant reach that…LOL
    so close yet so FAR……………………………………..ROFL

  17. anonymous Says:

Yes it is evident that the US Govt., through the NASA entity, is clearly not telling us the truth about the Mars explorations. This is not new, or a conspiracy theory. The govts. policy has always been to “knock rock the boat”, with regard to human civilization here on Earth, and outside forces that could potentially make humanity rethink the science vs. religion debate, or humanities fear of outside forces they cannot control. I don’t know why anyone would think that NASA or the US govt. would handle this any differently. If anything, the only news that will come from this will be positive with respect that it will further future investigations of Mars, giving humanity more time to deal with the eventual inevitable, i.e realizing our conceptions of God and the universe may not fit together perfectly as we see it today. 100 or 200 years from now may be different story, as science will evetually debunk the present theories before we have contact or evidence of lifeforms from an extra-terrestrial source.
