Indy and the Crystal Skull rakes in the bucks

p2pnet news | Movies:- Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull isn’t a movie. It’s part of a franchise. And it wasn’t made the sake of entertainment —- that part is almost incidental —- it was made to make money and as such, it’s a roaring success.

It pulled in an estimated $311 million in global box office sales through the weekend, according to studio estimates Monday, says the Associated Press, going on, Paramount Pictures estimated the action sequel made $151.1 million in the US and Canada from Thursday to the holiday Monday, and $160 million overseas.

“It marked the second biggest Memorial Day weekend opening ever, behind only “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” which made $153 million domestically from Thursday to Monday last year.”

The flick cost a reported $185 million to make, “even with Harrison Ford, director Steven Spielberg and writer George Lucas , deferring their usual fees for a greater share of the profits, says AP, noting the first three Indy movies raked in $1.2 billion worldwide.

“Marketing costs were undisclosed,” but it didn’t hurt that DVDs of the first three movies were re-released and aired on TV days before the opening, “and huge billboards sprung up”.

“The domestic box office total fell short of records and failed to meet the sky-high expectations of some analysts, expectations set in large part by an aggressive advertising push from Paramount Pictures that brought a half-dozen ‘Indiana Jones’ billboards to some intersections,” says the New York Times, continuing:

“Paramount is spending $150 million to market the $185 million picture, according to a Goldman Sachs media analyst.”

It was a, “spectacular weekend, and we are particularly excited to see the family business,” the story has said Rob Moore, president for marketing, stating happily.

It’d be interesting to know what part of free online viral marketing played in the success.

It wasn’t slated to officially appear until May 18, “when the critics will decide whether or not to dismember it,” but, “TOO LATE,” p2pnet posted. “It’s already happened. Online.”

How long before Hollywood’s MPAA issues a press release saying Indy Jones would’ve made ___ (fill in the blank) zillion dollars had it not been for file sharers?

It’s also the top movie download.
Wow, downloading sure hurt the box office didn’t it.

  2. Marco Sorfta Says:

Indy (Harrison Ford) looks like he was caught by a savage tribe and savagely savaged in that picture ;)

  3. Reader's Write Says:

    Dumb movie.

Either they’ll claim that they should have made more money, or when this is brought up as one of the countless pieces of evidence against their “we’re being devastated by filesharers” theory, they’ll attempt to deny the existence of this piece of proof. The RIAA certainly has been doing that consistently whenever their victims build up a case against them.
