Canadians rally for Net Neutrality

p2pnet news | Freedom:- Today is the day Canadians are gathering in Ottawa to tell the federal government what they think about Net Neutrality and bandwidth throttling.

Bell Canada was suffering under the delusion it could choke down accounts paid for by some of its customers, wrongly claiming they’re responsible for bandwidth congestion.

And instead of sticking up for the people who put him into office, industry minister Jim Prentice is backing Bell.

Today Canadians will tell them both just how wrong they are, with special buses leaving Toronto before the crack of dawn to ferry protesters to the rally.

The time?

11:30 am ET on Tuesday.

The place? Parliament Hill.

The CBC says it’ll be covering the event.

Back on November 3, 2007, “Comcast in the US of A is currently, and rightly, getting it in the neck for meddling with file sharing,” p2pnet posted in Bell Sympatico P2P Black List, going on >>>

But Comcast isn’t the only villain in the piece, and the US isn’t the only country where The Biggies have decided they can do whatever they want and get away with it, a la the movie and music cartels.

In the States, users have people trying to look after their rights and interests, but there’s no one doing that in Canada.

If you’re signed on with Bell-Sympatico and you’ve been unsuccessfully trying to coax a little more speed out of your suddenly sluggish computer; or, if you’ve been calling Bell-Sympatico support only to be told it’s not them, it’s you —- it isn’t you, says Ottawa Gal. Because here, “Bell-Sympatico is now following the Rogers lead,” she states. “It’s traffic shaping and throttling.”

Bell-Sympatico says it’s now taking action against ‘network abusers’ and performing ‘Traffic Management during periods of peak usage’, she says …

Show up at the rally and let Bell and Prentice know who’s really in charge.

What’ll you be demanding?

1 – Competition:

To stop Vertical Market leveraging

To stop/prevent a Duopoly Environment (where Cable/Telco incumbents control)

2 – Innovation:

To allow new content and applications to develop and/or flourish (ie: facebook/google)

3 – Consumer Rights:

Promote ISP transparency

Promote Consumer Privacy

Promote the need for Product delivery (get what you pay for)

Be there.

And stay tuned.

this is disgusting. We canadians need to put some pressure to our representatives to actually take a stance. It is very important than more people are aware of what net neutrality is. If you are a canadian blogger, blog about it spread awareness. !!!!See you in Ottawa

  2. Reader's Write Says:

The lack of news coverage on this and the possible copyright reform isn’t helping matters.
These things actually matter to canadians, unfortunately our government is bending over and taking it up the ass from the US.
Wake up CBC and report these issues every night so canadians will know it is happening.

When is the last time the CBC News interviewed Jim about the copyright bill??
Personally I think Jim is getting the copyright bill prof-read by the RIAA, CRIA and the MPAA so he can get a suitcase full of cash delivered to his hotel room..

  3. Ryan Says:

Yep this was covered here too:

More blogs and sites should be covering this to get the word out, no matter if you are in Canada or not… because today Canada… and tomorrow where YOU live
