Solaris: open source or not?
p2pnet.net News:- Yesterday, we reported Sun Microsystems didn’t appear to be exactly enthusiastic about stories that it’s taking Solaris OS open source.
Has it, however, decided to make hay while the Sun shines?
Yes, says sitepoint here, quoting Britain’s authoritative Financial Times as saying Sun will be releasing Solaris as open source “in the near future”.
No, says PC Pro here, going on: “Sun’s CEO Scott McNealy has squashed hopes that its Java programming language could be made open source, and cast a shadow over Sun COO Jonathan Schwartz’s statement yesterday that the Solaris operating system was to go the same way. At a news conference during the public sector technology showcase FOSE 2004, McNealy said he couldn’t understand how open sourcing Java would solve anything.”
Hmmm, says Dumisani Mtoba, senior systems engineer at Sun Microsystems SA as quoted in ITWeb here.”There is no need for Sun to rush the release of an open source version of its Solaris operating system because Linux still has a lot of catching up to do. Millions of lines of code have to be reviewed to decide what legally belongs to Sun. We also need to make a decision about what kind of open source licence Solaris will have.”
Stay tuned.
