Dell joins the mini-laptop league

p2pnet news | Products:- They’re all doing it now, mimicking the One Laptop per Child project.

Intel took a cynical shot at it, but missed, and Asus came out with the eee PC 900, definitely the most successful laptop mini so far.

Now it’s Dell’s turn, says Gizmodo.

It’s a, “small form factor notebook, just like the Asus Eee and the HP 2133,” says the story.

There’s no news on operating system or price, but it’s a, “low-cost notebook meant for developing countries, and I hope here,” says the story, adding:

“Maybe it’s Atom-powered. Who knows? But I do see three USB ports, a card reader, VGA out, Ethernet”.

How big is the screen? Unknown, ” but it’s small.”

Michael Dell was at the D: All Things Digital conference and, “Hats off to Brian Lam of Gizmodo as he seems to have caught Michael roaming the halls between sessions and saw he was carrying something our Ideastorm contributors will recognize,” blogs Dell, adding:

“Michael positioned it as the perfect device for the next billion internet users.”

But what’s really interesting is: hundreds of thousands of kids with no money, no resources and, at the moment, no futures, nonetheless comprise a significant part of the target market for these systems.

After all, one day, they’ll be grown-up.

Those of them who survive, that is …….

You wrote “Those of them who survive, that is ”

That’s the part that bothers me the most. At face value, it sounds like a great plan. However, a lot of their targeted population have basic survival needs that are not even being met.
