p2pnet news | RIAA News:- David Cook is doing well. Really well.

He’s an American Idol winner who’s, “blazed quite a trail through this week’s singles chart,” says E! Online, going on that Cook saw 11 of his songs debut on the Billboard Hot 100, “the most new entries for an artist in one week in the chart’s 50-year history”.

Cool. But that isn’t where it’s at. To really score, Cook had to catch the ears of the online crowd, which he seems to have done.

He’s achieved 942,000 digital downloads according to Nielsen SoundScan and, “This is fairly remarkable as the numbers are from the week ending Sunday, meaning Cook averaged six figure downloads a day,” says Tech.Blorge, going on >>>

His nearest competitor, first runner-up David Archuleta, didn’t manage even half of that number with only 323,000 downloads within the same period. Third place Jason Castro trailed behind with 64,000 downloads to their name.

Contrary to the RIAA’s constant moaning about record sales going down and MP3s hastening the death of the record industry, Cook’s popularity is an example of the demand for digital content.

Artists like Radiohead, Coldplay and Nine Inch Nails have gotten much press for their digital distribution experiments, and if that’s one thing digital downloads are good for, it’s publicity.

That’s otherwise known as viral advertising —- priceless free promotion, in short.

“Another Idol runner-up, Elliott Yamin, released the song ‘Movin’ On’ from his self-titled debut album on AOL’s First Listen and iTunes, as a teaser,” says the story, adding:

“Yamin went on to score the highest new artist debut on an independent label in SoundScan history, achieving success without being tied to a major record label.”

Major record label.

That’d be one of the Big 4, Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony BMG, who aren’t happy unless they’re making someone’s life —- preferably one of their own customers —- miserable.
