Thus does Canada’s chartattack.com kick off its piece on the fact Kroeger – “Nickelback frontman and 604 Records executive” – has “shaken the big yellow glove of that red-haired harlequin known as Ronald to become the Canadian spokesman for the new McDonalds Big Mac Meal Tracks promotion”.
Chartattack has intimate knowledge of the downloading public. As an example, of prepaid cards for use in conjunction with download sites, it said recently:
“[...] as record companies will readily inform you, the majority of illegal downloaders are young teens who, unless they’re spoiled little brats who get their own car for their 16th birthday, have no access to a credit card to access most legal download sites. Is it really a surprise that these young people, who are either not working at all or have some low paying retail job, are not rushing out to pay what they do make on music they can take for free?”
See? From this you’ll be able to tell chartattack has all its excreta in one sock, if that’s the correct terminology.
On the Big Mac promo, “As if the delicious burger and convenient cardboard flip-box that your Big Mac comes in wasn’t treat enough now you’ll also receive an access code with each sandwich or, for the more gluttonous of us, Extra Value Meal. Then, through a partnership with Sony and Puretracks, you’ll be able to log on to a website that will allow you to download one song absolutely free.”

In case you’ver never heard of Nickelback, the UK’s The Webshite has its own Nickelback promo and critique. The latter is below and the former is well worth a listen.

“While Kroeger admitted that it was difficult for younger people to have access to credit cards for the legal download sites, he claimed the problem ran deeper than simple economics. ‘Young people don’t think,’ says Kroeger with more than a hint of anger in his voice. ‘I’d be surprised if young people know what the hell Sam The Record Man or HMV was. Everyone just goes to the computer, downloads whatever the hell they want, they burn it and then they just play it in their cars. That’s killing the music industry’.”

“Kroeger sees the McDonalds/Sony initiative as being a positive step to help the music industry and those musicians hurt by rampant illegal downloads,” says chartattack.

He says that young people don’t think. 90% of the people that go to Nickleback concerts are young kids. These young people made him filthy rich, even though his bands music really sucks. It’s kind of like pop grunge…a VERY watered and dumbed down version of the great grunge bands.

Hi! I have read all about this news and I’m a NB fan. On principle I don’t go and I will never enter to McDonald’s fast food and I ‘ll never expect that C. Kroeger is involved in this kind of “fight against p2p”. If he thinks that downloading music in illegal ways is a prerogative of young people, well, he’s completely wrong. Everyone does it and love to do it ’cause it’s free, even people who works for McD. for a low wage!!!
I’m a simple Italian housewife who cannot find music – rock music – in a simple musicshop, even in big cities, so it is simple for me to check in the net and download and I will do it again, in spite to McD. burgers and C: Kroeger’s sermons.

Hi: i’m with Lillibeth. i’ve found a lot of stuff online that i’d never be able to find anywhere else. i’d happily pay a reasonable amount for it but i’m f*ucked if i’m going to use any of those garbage sites that are keeping the big music dionsaur alive, even if i was willing to pay $1 a track, which i’m not.

this isnt the first time kroeger has shown his ignorance, I think he flipped of City-TV or CFNY or somebody b/c they didnt play his music enough…
I think his attitude is a perfect fit for the record companies, that is “I have no talent or product worth buying, but I deserve all your money anyways…even the kids with low-paying retail jobs, I want it all!!”

ok first off, i am a “young people”, whom as Chad Kroeger describe as a person who “don’t think”. I have never attended one of nickelbacks concerts, and i have never purchased any of nickelbacks cds. nor do i plan to. I have however, DOWNLOADED them and by doing so i must say that they are a “formula band” and quite a good one at that. now on another subject, WHOS BRIGTH IDEA WAS IT TO GIVE YOU ONE FREE DOWNLOAD WHEN YOU BUY A FUC*ING BIGMAC? ONE? come on you pay 3-4 dollars when you purchase a big mac, and you get only one fuc*ing song? you buy half of a cd for that? or you could buy a week worth of internet access and download a shitload of music for FREE with that money. and mcDonalds is gonna give you one free song to go along with a greasy burger

Royalties are collected on blank CDRs in Canada to compensate artists for downloading. And the Canadian court has determined that downloading IS legal.
If Kroeger isn’t getting any royalties, maybe he isn’t as popular as he thinks.
