‘Shake-up’ for internet proposed – BBC
The net could see its biggest transformation in decades if plans to open up the address system are passed. The net’s regulators will vote on Thursday to decide if the strict rules on so-called top level domain names, such as .com or .uk, can be relaxed. If approved, it could allow companies to turn their brands into domain names while individuals could also carve out their own corner of the net. The move could also see the launch of .xxx, after years of wrangling.

Amy Winehouse diagnosed with emphysema – Times Online
Amy Winehouse has been diagnosed with emphysema, thought to have been caused by smoking crack cocaine, her father has revealed. The Grammy-award winning singer is being treated in a private London hospital, and could require a permanent oxygen mask, Mitch Winehouse told the Sunday Mirror. The taxi driver said that his daughter started a drug replacement programme last Tuesday after being told she would need to wear the mask and may be confined to a wheelchair unless she abstained from smoking crack cocaine.

AP, blogger resolve dispute over copyright – Associated Press
A news discussion site and The Associated Press have resolved a dispute over an AP demand that the site remove some of the news agency’s content. In a statement Friday, Rogers Cadenhead said he is “glad” the dispute over his site, the Drudge Retort, has ended. He said a larger conflict remains between AP’s view of acceptable use of its content and the practices of many bloggers. Cadenhead declined to comment further, referring all questions to his attorney.

Actor Woody Harrelson sued by paparazzo – Los Angeles Times
A paparazzo filed suit Friday against Woody Harrelson, asking for $2.5 million and alleging that the Academy Award-nominated actor struck him in Hollywood nearly two years ago. Josh Levine, who was working for the celebrity news website tmz.com, was filming Harrelson near Las Palmas Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard about 11 p.m. on June 29, 2006, according to the suit filed in Superior Court. Levine alleges that the actor broke his video camera, choked him, then ordered his bodyguard to attack him. Levine contends the star thrust the camera into his ribs. Levine’s suit said he still has mental, physical, nervous and emotional pain and suffering. He is also suing the unidentified bodyguard.

California pols ask ISPs to block child porn – CNET News
California’s governor and attorney general are asking Internet service providers to help stop the dissemination of child pornography. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Attorney General Edmund G. Brown Jr. issued a press release Friday asking Internet service providers in California to follow the lead of Verizon Communications, Time Warner Cable, and Sprint in “removing child pornography from existing servers and blocking channels” that disseminate the illegal material.
