It does hurt there bottom line, at least some.

I woulden't have bought my iPod at all -because- of the lack of .ogg support. However I had gotten mine as a christmas gift. And it is fantastic, but the .ogg problem still naggs me time and time again.

Apperantaly Apple isent going to add support anytime soon.. I'm concitering using the Linux firmware patch to enable .ogg support. (I am extreamly nervous about this but..)

Firstly the iPod sells at a premium price and secondly Apple is supposed to be a customer supporting company.

The actual cost of coding the necessary decoder would be negligible.

And if you guy would continue to read up Gizmodo story, you would se that this employee "not speaking for his employer Rio Audio" apparently doesn't know really what he's talking about http://www.gizmodo.com/archives/ogg-vorbis-on-ipod-a-rebuttal-015738.php

I think it comes down to the bottom line. Adding vorbis support (the audio part of Ogg) would cost money. It would satisfy some audiophiles, but would it make enough extra sales to justify the cost?

I suspect not.

The "iPod can't handle vorbis/Ogg" argument is a bit suspect - it comes from a representative of a flailing competitor to the iPod and at a time when the open source community already has a beta of vorbis running on the iPod (it's not there yet, though so don't crack open the champagne -more details on /. if you want it).

cheers, Mark

...or maybe it is because no one cares about OGG support other than a hand full of power users. Most people barely understand what AAC is nor do they want to know....for them AAC is good enough. You have still not defined what Apple gains by supporting OGG? a few hundred users? a thousand? I just don't get it?
