It’s launched a Chinese-language version with users, “now directed through to zh-cn.facebook.com, offering simplified and traditional Chinese language versions,” says the Guardian.
Not only but also, it’s added Russian, Finnish, Portuguese, Czech and Catalan offerings, says the story, going on:
“However, launching in China marks a significant step for the site as it aims to compete with MySpace to build a share of the country’s internet population, which overtook the US in April to become the world’s biggest single internet market.”
Facebook will be up against domestic sites such as Xiaonei, as well as the Chinese MySpace, introduced in April last year, says the Guardian, adding:
“Over the weekend it was also reported that Facebook has outgrown its headquarters in Palo Alto, in California’s Silicon Valley south of San Francisco, and is looking for a larger base as its staff is expected to grow to 1,000 by the end of the year.”

Let me guess; In order to offer a Chinese Facebook site, the company setup either servers or offices in China, ensuring that when the Chinese government comes knocking for the names of more innocent people they can lock up, Facebook will be legally obligated to turn them over? I hope I’m wrong, but I really doubt it.
Since the internet is a global network, why don’t they run the servers in the US so that they don’t have to obey China’s laws?

What keeps the chinese Gov now from having a little friendly panda application snooping on your private data on facebook tied up to your photo protesting the chinese Gov policies. Feel any safer on your next trip to China? Hope likewise that you do not work in logistics as they have one of the largest merchant fleets in the world.
