Handguns are OK in Washington, DC

p2pnet news | Off Topic:- It’s legal for people who live in Washington, DC, to keep hand guns in their homes, says the US Supreme Court.
“Despite media coverage purporting to show that escalating violence in Iraq has the country spiraling out of control, civilian death statistics complied by Rep. Steve King, R-IA, indicate that Iraq actually has a lower civilian violent death rate than Washington, D.C.,” said newsmax.com in May, 2006.
According to FBI statistics, “in 2006 the rate of violent crime in Washington, D.C. was 1445.84 crimes per 100,000 population,” said the Wikipedia. “Among the cities reporting with 100,000 or more population, Washington ranked number 18 in its rate of violent crime.”
Now, “In a historic ruling yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court recognized a constitutional right for individuals to keep guns in their homes for self-defense,” says the Baltimore Sun. “It was the first major high court ruling on the Second Amendment.
“The 5-4 decision came in a closely watched challenge to a 32-year-old Washington law that prohibited residents from keeping any kind of handgun or shotguns and rifles without trigger locks in their homes - the toughest gun law in the nation.”
The ruling, “drew words of support from both major-party presidential candidates,” says Bloomberg News, adding:
Republican John McCain, “in a statement called gun ownership a ‘fundamental right - sacred, just as the right to free speech and assembly.”
Democrat Barack Obama said on Bloomberg Television, “that he agrees with the court’s ‘overall reasoning’ and the Washington gun ban probably ‘overshot the runway’.”

I live in DC and this is roughly equal to legalizing pot. Most of the people you know are doing it - now it’s just legal.

Well thats just great. Everybody and their dog will have a handgun. What a brilliant idea! If somebody breaks into your house - Shoot them! If somebody accedentally runs over your bushes - Shoot them too!. If somebody dares to knock on your door and try to sell you cookies while the football game is on - What the heck. Why not shoot them as well…
This is probably the most genius idea ever to keeping Washington safe. Congratulations! …idiots.

Hey Rick, calm yourself, your knee jerk liberalism is showing. First of all, I very much doubt “everyone and his dog” will be allowed to own a handgun. My guess is they will replace the handgun ban with a strict licensing system. And yes Rick, it really is not unreasonable that in a scumpit like D.C., some people would like to own a handgun to protect themselves. “If somebody breaks into your house - Shoot them!” This is typical idiotic thinking where if someone is violent enough to break into a house when they know people are there the residents are not allowed to protect themselves, but are supposed to submit themselves to the “mercy” of the housebreaker, or try to sneak out of their own home and hope they don’t get caught by the thug who broke in. Sorry Rick, I never agreed with that mentality. You are woefully ignorant and it shows. Just being allowed to own a gun does not automatically give you the right to shoot anyone you don’t like, if you shoot someone for “running over your bushes” you are looking at serious jail time.

Could Rick be an Australian? I ask because they took all our guns off us after the Port Arthur Massacre in Tasmania. The firearms regulations became so tight most law-abiding sports shooters just gave up ownership. Now, more than 10 years later, the criminals still have weapons. And we’re suposed to lie down, roll over, and let them scr*w us again. Oh yes, we gotta smile as well.
