MP3 Rocket: new p2pnet supporter

p2pnet news Advertising:- | P2P:- I’m happy to say p2pnet has a new supporter/advertiser.

MP3 Rocket is a free Gnutella P2P client for the Java Platform.

Released under the GNU General Public License, it comes with a pay-for PRO upgrade offering with additional network connections and direct customer support.

MP3 Rocket says it offers live on-demand streams for more than 3,000 movies and TV shows, a Live Radio feature featuring more than 1,000 live radio stations, and a Game Player tapping more than 1,000 gains.

It shares its library through the Digital Audio Access Protocol, meaning when it’s appropriately configured, files shared will be detectable on the local network by DAAP-enabled devices (eg, iTunes).

Other features include the ability to browse the most popular downloads, publish a rating of your personal favorites, the ability to preview files while you’re downloading, and effective parental controls via built-in keyword filters.

100 Most Popular Artists

MP3 Rocket’s developers started the MP3 Rocket project when the RIAA began its lawsuit against Limewire, it says.

“We had concerns Limewire would begin to start filtering Limewire’s file sharing content,” one of the Canadian developers told p2pnet.

“So the MP3 Rocket was born to keep our digital freedoms alive.”

MP3 Rocket’s new ’100 Most Popular Artists’ application lets users vote (unique for each p2p file hash) on their favorite performers, and the software automatically displays in the ‘most popular’ artists by week and month allowing for easy downloading of favorite songs, and allowing users to share their favorite bands, singer-songwriters, comedians, and other performers with their friends.

In February, the MP3 Rocket founders promised they’ll, “continue the fight for digital freedom and will not block their customer’s files and will never filter files based on license detection”.

Blocks spammer’s fake files

Meanwhile, for anyone with a tech bent, the second Limewire technology, adopted by MP3Rocket, has improved file filtering technology which blocks “fake files” and spam files from the enemies of files sharing and spammers,” it states.

The new “TigerTree” hash technology blocks spammer’s fake files, such as those containing spam, viruses and Trojans, say the MP3 Rocket guys, gooing on >>>

The TigerTree Spam filter (included in the latest 5.0.3 version of the MP3Rocket) works by storing information about files, where search results can be filtered by keywords, size, verified SHA-1 hashes or even IP address. Information about what is spam is gathered through two methods: One, which includes the user marking which results they find to be fake, and another which covers the learning of items commonly found in search results.

“Both of these measures are used to give each file a rating and once this rating goes over a certain threshold, the file is flagged as spam.

The filter is designed to learn by storing information.

When a search is conducted, the user can block certain results by key words, size, verified SHA-1 hashes and/or IP address. Taking this information, the filter will then begin to learn by creating spam profiles. If a future search result fits a malicious profile, the file is labeled as spam.

By automatically blocking “fake files” and spam MP3Rocket users find exactly what they are looking for faster than ever without the hassle of garbage files.

Features in the free MP3Rocket’s 5.0.3 release:

1. New “Watch TV” functionally that provides live on demand streams to over 3,000 Movies and TV Shows.

2. New “Live Radio” allows users to listen to over 1000 top live radio stations.

3. New “Game Player” provides over 1000 fun games.

4. “Most Popular” feature allows user to find most popular music, movies and pictures. Popular files are determined by actual real time user votes. The TV, Radio and Game streams also utilize this “most popular” voting feature to improve user experience.

5. Firewall to Firewall Transfers. Since about 60% of users are currently firewalled, this feature greatly increases the amount of content on the network.

6. Faster network connections. Using new “UDP Host Caches”, MP3Rocket starts up and connects faster than ever before!

7. iTunes Integration. Windows and Mac users can now take advantage of MP3Rocket’s iTunes integration.

Note: according to the developers >>>

Softpedia guarantees that MP3 Rocket 5.0.3 is 100% FREE, which means it is a freeware product (both for personal and commercial use) that does not contain any form of malware, including but not limited to: spyware, viruses, trojans and backdoors. This software product was tested thoroughly and was found absolutely clean; therefore it can be installed with no concern by any computer user.

Cheers!

looks good, seems to download quite quickly, i’m impressed… too bad theres no G2 support :(

  2. Is MP3 Rocket a SCAM? Says:

MP3Rocket.com has often been labeled a “scam site”. These P2P scams are typically companies that exploit another person’s or company’s open-source software – making money off a product that is freely available elsewhere by preying on the less-knowledgeable consumers.

The MP3 Rocket installation contains a copy of open-source Limewire along with other bundled applications and ‘enhancements’ – which apparently are NOT opensource – that piggyback off the Limewire engine.

Although MP3 Rocket claims to be in compliance of (Limewire’s) GPL, they don’t even post their source code. On their Sourceforge project page, only the .exe binaries are listed. On http://www.mp3rocket.com/source.htm they list a 2005 version of their source code, but no source code for any release since then. MP3rocket.com makes no mention anywhere on their site that they use Limewire source code.

MP3 Rocket claims to offer streaming video channels. A lot of other sites and services offer streaming video. Maybe MP3 Rocket leeches off these other companies’ streams instead of providing their own?

Let’s not forget that after the KaZaA spyware scandal, iMesh always touted itself as being “spyware free” even though it was loaded with 3rd-party bundled softwware. Is the third party software contained in MP3 Rocket uninstalled when MP3 Rocket is uninstalled, or does it remain on the person’s computer, requiring manual removal? Whether MP3 Rocket’s IE toolbar is technically considered spyware is debatable.

Someone has been spamming the download sites with multiple glowing reviews of MP3 Rocket, and it’s so blatant that it could not have come from anyone other than the people behind MP3 Rocket themselves.

    from http://www.mp3rocket.com/faq.htm :

“Q: How can I make some extra cash selling your software?

A: After purchasing and trying our software, many of our customers love it so much that they decide to start selling it themselves! Some have been so successful that they quit their day job and are able to support their family working from home! You can too!”

In other words, create your own scam site and start raking it in. Never mind that it’s a very crowded field.

I also get plenty of these work-from-home type scams in my email every day, and if I’m going to quit my day job why choose one that only promises “able to support their family” over one that guarantees I’ll be a millionaire?

Although it’s understandable that P2PNET needs sponsors, it’s a shame it got hooked up with a company with an apparent lack of decency and ethics.

err.. jon is the above post right?

  4. Jon Says:

^^ I did a search before I accepted this booking and didn’t come up with anything alarming, although I admit it wasn’t exhaustive and I didn’t read the FAQ.

The sentence quoted is over the top, though, and I’ll be checking with my contact today.

    Cheers!

MP3 Rocket should make sure they are added to this WIKI run By CIPPIC:

    p2peducation.pbwiki.com

    ..and state their uniqueness.

  6. Anonymous Says:

oh after reading the above readers write about mp2 rocket and the possible scam, then IF true, they should not be listed on p2peducation.pbwiki.com.

  7. Andy Says:

I had a friend who told me that she had paid for a service to download music, because she didn’t want to take part in illegal filesharing. It turned out that she’d paid for mp3rocket. She was rather upset to find out that what she was doing was no more nor less illegal than if she’d used a free program. Does that make it a scam? Probably not, on the scale of things; but it was certainly a marketing approach that took advantage of the naive. (This was a year or so ago, so they might have cleaned up their act by now.)

  8. Jon Says:

    Hi all:

I’ve spoken to my contact and he says he’ll be adding a comment of his own later today.

    Cheers!

  9. Paschal Says:

As a developer of the MP3 Rocket software I wanted to post a few comments to defend the MP3 Rocket software. Guys, it is much more easy to criticize than to risk your own skins in promoting p2p but how much p2p code have you written and released this week? Are you directly taking on the RIAA and the MPAA?
1.) MP3 Rocket is not a scam site, it is free software. MP3 Rocket is fully keeping with Limewire open source license. Limewire’s open source license allows others to redistribute the code and charge for enhancements and customer support. Like Limewire you can upgrade to pro for enhanced network connections and direct customer support.
2.) Yes just like Frostwire the MP3 Rocket is a branch of the Limewire code. Unlike Frostwire, the MP3 Rocket software (about screen) the MP3 Rocket directly gives credit to Limewire open source.
3.) MP3 Rocket does distribute is source code to developers.
4.) Both Frostwire and MP3 Rocket distribute toolbars which customer can choose to install or not.
5.) The FAQ is a bit over the top. Many have made full time incomes promoting the MP3 Rocket, but I agree with your criticism and will change the FAQ today.
Again thanks for your comments. We want to see P2P survive and thrive. To do this we need to make some money to keep our development going. You must admit our “hash” voting and direct streams are enhancements in the P2P world.

  10. Janko Says:

Paschal, just out of curiosity: Where do I find the source code for the latest version of MP3 Rocket, as required by the GPL?

  11. f4te Says:

Ok after using mp3 rocket for a couple days i’ve found some goods and bads. First off, i use Opera, and that must be causing some sort of problem with the Mp3R html engine or something because the videos page freezes on both my laptop and desktop, so i have for force shutdown the java RTE. I’m running vista x64 and x32 on desktop and laptop. Another problem i found was when i left mp3R alone for a while, it would start using up large amounts of bandwidth- so much i couldn’t even stream a movie over the network! I’m not sure what thats about, but i’m definatly no longer leaving this app open unatennded.

On the good side though, it does seem to download music quite quickly, with plenty of connectable sources, and the searches often yeild a solid number of results.

  12. TheOne Says:

    ” I’m running vista ”

No way that could be part of the problem.

  13. Anonymous Says:

    @Paschal,

Sounds like an honest reply. TY.

  14. Paschal Says:

    Janko,

Here is the link to the MP3 Rocket currnet source code, from the developer section on the home page.

    http://www.mp3rocket.com/source.htm

Today I have updated the page with our current beta code that we are currently enhancing, it may not be fully compilable.

  15. Anonymous Says:

MP3 Rocket has a good opportunity to add features that Limewire is missing. One critical feature that Limewire has for years refused to include, despite frequent requests, is the option to disable the ability to allow other users to get a list of all shared files. The anti-P2Ps use bots that browse everyone on the network, and then target people for lawsuits based on the size of those browse lists.

For the benefit of users who aren’t aware of the danger of offering shared-file lists to strangers, an even safer solution would be the permanent disabling of that browse feature, as its benefit to the community is strongly outweighed by its abuse by the enemies of P2P.

  16. Andy Says:

@Paschal – I looked at the site and it doesn’t seem so bad as I remember, even the wayback machine doesn’t turn anything up. I suspect that I was reading some of your “affiliate” material, which may have been somewhat less honest.

However, there are aspects of your site which make it less-than-clear to novices:

    1. Your language encourages novices to compare your service with sites that sell music. You talk about the absence of download, monthly fees or bandwidth limits. Your emphasis on “membership” implies that it is access to the music that is being paid for, rather than the pro software.

    2. Having seeded the idea that this is you providing the songs legally, you are careful not to break that illusion. You mention filesharing only in small print in a disclaimer, and in the page title (no one reads that!). Everywhere else, you talk about a “download” network – a strong implication that “members” (your word) only “download”. You also mention the “Gnutella” network, which naive users would not recognise as being a filesharing network. You describe the Gnutella network as “… a system of computers connected only through the internet” which makes it sound like it’s YOUR system of servers (or one you share with other music providers, perhaps?).

P.S. get that talking girly off your front page; I hate websites that talk to you, expecially when I have not yet given them focus. Even video sharing sites wait for you to click “play” before blurting their stuff out.

  17. Anonymous Says:

Jon and Paschal thanks for clearing up my doubts! (I posted that third comment, and I think its really cool that you are interested in your reader’s opinions, Jon. If only you could teach a couple of lessons to the industry ;D)

  18. Paschal Says:

    Andy,

Thank you for your comments on the home page, I will have a meeting with my marketing guys and tell them to soften the marketing language. As requested I have removed the “talking lady” off the homepage. I replaced the word “member” with “software” To make the other changes we will need to do a site re-design. Once again thank you for our comments. We will use more of them on the next website re-design.

  19. Paschal Says:

I agree with the readers’ comments that MP3 Rocket has a good opportunity to add features and functionality missing in Limewire and Frostwire. We are a flexible development team open to suggestions, with the goal of keeping P2P alive, healthy and growing. We are prepared to fight as long as needed to make file sharing a right of every global citizen.

I agree with the readers comment that the “browser host” functionality is being used by anti-p2p forces. But want is needed here is clients that “block” the lookup feature. Since we cannot remove existing clients with the functionality, we need to “block” the ability of existing clients to view other p2p clients. We are working on this functionality and should have it deployed within six months.

  20. smoker Says:

Hope that linux version is out soon to give it a try :)

    P.S
(Fedora rpm would be very windows easy :P )

  21. Anonymous Says:

    @andy
Why don’t you go ask bell to remove their talking lady from their web site too.
bet you would be told to talk a long walk to hell.

Alo, most of what you babbled about is what all other similar sites are doing. Let us know when you have written all oftem and their replies.

    [insert eyeball roll here]

  22. Ladybug Says:

I purchased this for my son to download music for his Zune. It works JUST AS ADVERTISED! Any company calling MP3Rocket a scam is simply trying to steal their customers. I had no idea I could get TV shows, Movies, or Radio. I discovered all the other features after the fact. We watch movies from my pc in the evening when we dont feel like running to Blockbuster. This is a great product Handsdown! It pays for it self after 1 days use. =0) Im a huge Fan! and so is my 16 yr old son!

  23. Anonymous Says:

    @Ladybug

In this case the word “scam” means paying for something that you could have got for free.

In this case software. MP3 rocket is basically a copy of Limewire. Limewire is free.

You can get TV shows, Movies, or Radio FREE through many different internet sources. Start by using Google.

  24. Paschal Says:

    @Reader,

You missed the point, the MP3 Rocket software is free. Yes, if you like the product you can pay for a pro upgrade just like Limewire. So by your definition Limewire would be a “scam” also since you can download all content directly from the web.

Why can you allow anyone to give MP3 Rocket props on its unique features? No one else in the P2P world has unique hash voting. The hash voting provides direct feedback of the most popular and clean user filtered files. Where else can you find this? Sure you can find movie, TV shows, and radio and games streams on Google. But I bet is nice for her and her son to find them categorized in one place without all the annoying ads.

Another unique feature with the movie, TV, radio and games streams is they are listed/ranked in order of most popular or time watched, so the best quality content moves the top of the list. Many may find this quality sort feature useful.

  25. CD Says:

Just because it is a pay site doesn’t make it a legit site. I know someone who has been sued for about $700,000 because he was sharing files through MP3 rocket. Watch out if you download from this site, the default setting is to “share files”. That is where the RIAA is going after people.
