Xandros buys Linspire

p2pnet news | Open Source:- “Former Linspire president and CEO Kevin Carmony - whose relationship with his former employer has turned acrimonious, to say the least - reported on his blog that Xandros and Linspire signed an agreement in principle for Xandros to buy Linspire June 19,” says 2muchcoffeeman on Slashdot, going on >>>

Carmony includes a scan of the memo to Linspire shareholders announcing the deal, which requires the former Linspire company to change its name.

According to the memo, the stockholders voted to change the company’s name to Digital Cornerstone, Inc. Despite the wording of the Linspire memo to stockholders, this deal apparently came as a surprise to Carmony and other stockholders.

Some here may remember that both Xandros and Linspire signed patent protection deals with Microsoft in 2007.

On ZDNet, Dana Blankenhorn sums it up like this:

“Still trying to make a whole bigger than the sum of its open source parts, Xandros scooped up Linspire today.

“One outlet described the deal as Linspire founder Michael Robertson deserting a sinking ship, but others will claim that it was sunk last June when it agreed to join Microsoft’s ‘IP Protection Racket’.”

Lindows will stop using Lindows, p2pnet posted in 2004, going on:

“That’s the bottom line in an agreement between Microsoft and Lindows (oops, Linspire) who say they’ve reached a worldwide settlement in the trademark infringement cases involving David and Goliath.

“Over the next few months Lindows will cease using the term Lindows and transition to Linspire globally as our company name and primary identifier for our operating system product,” stated Lindows CEO Michael Robertson.

Blogged Carmony in April:

“[…] Linspire is struggling, which is not encouraging for Linspire shareholders or customers.”
