‘Spanish RIAA’ freedom of speech case

p2pnet news RIAA | Freedom | P2P:- Is it safe for anyone is Spain to offer open comments on a blog?

And is it even legal under European law?

Duncan Riley asks both questions says in a post on his The Inquisitr.

It centres on the plight of Julio Alonso, founder of Spanish blog network, Weblogs SL who’s been fined €9,000(about $14,1656), plus legal costs, “for comments made by other people on his personal blog,” says Riley, going on >>>

What makes the story more interesting is that Alonso was sued by SGAE, (the General Society of Authors and Publishers), the Spanish equivalent of the RIAA.

The post that ultimately led to the court case was made way back in 2004, and was titled SGAE=Thieves.

Neither an email from Julio, nor the links provided, make it clear, “exactly what the comments were, and as of July 4 they were removed per the court order,” says The Inquisitr, adding:

“What I did make out (with some Google translate help) is that the court found that the 22 comments posted by readers in response to that post had damaged the ‘honor’ of SGAE’.”

He has the right to appeal, adds the post, pointing out Spanish speakers can follow the case on Alonso’s blog.

Going to hell in a hand basket.

See no evil, type no evil, download no evil.

Nothing to see here, just the move along to the channels of paid distribution and tick the box that hands over your rights of free speech to the corporations and governments.

Move along. Move along. Thanks for paying… um… we mean playing.
