Only 2,000 iPhones for Canada?

p2pnet news | Mobiles:- Question: How do you spell Rogers?

Answer: G-R-E-E-D-Y.

Apple has decided to pull its iPhone 3Gs, Jesus Phones, as they’ve been dubbed, from its six Canadian retail stores for Friday’s launch because Apple is, “disgusted with Rogers Wireless for dumping egregious service plans on would-be iPhone 3G buyers,” says AppleInsider.

The company has, “decided that its Canadian retail stores will have no part in helping the carrier market the new handset to customers,” it says.

And according to a p2pnet reader, only 2,000 jPhones will be available to Macolytes.

“The triple-locked phone will cost 10 times $200 sticker price” and, “Apple is said to have cut to the bone the number of units it’s making available to Rogers,” p2pnet posted yesterday, going on:

“A family member in charge of the cell phone section at Rogers has been told that there will be a total of 2,000 iPhones” for the whole of Canada,” said a p2pnet Reader’s Write.

And only Rogers and partner Fido will be the ones selling them via a, “steep 3-year contracts that require a minimum monthly payment of $60 for just 150 minutes, 75 text messages, and 400MB of data,” as AppleInsider puts it.

Darnation! Now us Canadians will miss the second coming !!!

And it’s just DRM by another name.

  1. Reader's Write Says:

Why not just buy an unlocked iPhone? It has been available in Canada since I do not know when, and there is NO shortage at all.

Except that data plans are so ridiculous that there is no point in using it directly. But there is a hack (search for it on Facebook using iphone rogers keywords) that allows using WAP on iPhone, and Rogers plans for WAP are far more generous.

  2. Reader's Write Says:

Or you could realize it’s just a phone (an overpriced phone even in not with rogers) and ignore the whole thing. Burining some US $1 bills sounds like more fun than an iphone to me.

  3. Reader's Write Says:

Whoever buy a #G iphone Roger crap is such a loser.

Let’s see how long it take for roger to find 2000 losers in Canada!

Let’s watch an laugh! It’s going to be cool!

  4. Reader's Write Says:

The Exec’s brains at Roger must have frozen during the last Canadian Winter.

Is it because of the global warming?

  5. Jay Says:

The thing is the people that will rush out and buy the iPhone dont read these kind of news stories on the net. They hear about the iPhone from whereever and go purchase it. They dont care about all the fine print. They just have to have the newest thing to look good for their friends and show it off.

Most people dont care about getting locked into a contract cause most of the time they are going to stay with the same provider anyways. I was on telus for a 3 year contract then went on a 2 year now half way through a 3 year.

Of course Im not to happy with Telus going to be charging for incoming text messages.

Wow.. this must be the least helpful comment I’ve read:
“But there is a hack (search for it on Facebook using iphone rogers keywords)…”

Honestly!? Search on Facebook? You mean GOOGLE? lol

Also I don’t understand why everyone is SOOOO bitter, we’ve been getting fed by the hand (Rogers / Fido / Telus / Canadian Telecom) for years, and have bitched at the same level of service / pricing. Nobody charges 6.95$ access fee anymore. It was an initial pay-for-network cost that the Canadian Gov wanted as collateral. Now Rogers / Fido etc.. dropped the ‘Gov sanctioned verbiage’ and still expects us to pay.

Lets start with the system access fee bull$$it first then worry about data plans after.

That might lead to a better approach to this whole matter, then again Rogers will only respond to the market or large companies like Apple. So Canadians will have a hard time.
