‘Sign our petition,’ NDP tells Jim Prentice

p2pnet news view Politics | P2P:- “We’ve had over 7,000 signatures in less than 24 hours!” – NDP digital culture spokesman Charlie Angus told p2pnet last night.
He’s even invited industry minister Jim Prentice to sign on.
Angus was talking about the NDP Stop the Text-Message Cash Grab campaign against the new Bell Mobility and Telus Mobility bid to rip their customers off.
“Cellphone companies know they’ve crossed a line in the ether when rival politicians trip over themselves to join a groundswell of teenage outrage over controversial new fees,” says the Toronto Star.
“A day after Telus and Bell Mobility – but not Rogers – slapped a 15-cent charge on incoming text messages (previously free), Industry Minister Jim Prentice has summoned the cellphone chiefs to Ottawa to explain their ill-thought out decision.’ NDP Leader Jack Layton howled about the ‘aggressive anti-consumer action’ and called for a ‘consumer revolt’ on his very own online petition.
“They might have added, in text lingo, YBS (You’ll be sorry).”
Angus said the NDP petition was on average pulling in a new signature every 30 seconds, also pointing out the launch of a Facebook group to oppose the new fees.
But, he says, “We need more people to sign the petition, join the Facebook group and forward this email to their friends, family and co-workers.
“We have momentum. Today Rogers caved to public pressure over iPhone rates – working together we can stop the text message cash-grab.”

So somebody pays to send a message, and after somebody else pays to receive that same message?..
That’s genius!! Why don’t they do this to snail mail??….
(do I have to mention this is sarcasm?)

Hmm, so does that mean Telus & Bell will do everytning in their power to allow spam, since they will make money off of it?
Will they now give us the ability to block text messages, or to only allow them from certain numbers? At least with a phone call I can choose to answer or not, with a text message I have no control.

Soon Bell, Telus and Rogers will have something to worry about.
