TV first, cinemas second, says Mark Cuban

p2pnet news view Movies | P2P:- Mark Cuban, “plans to air new movies produced by his company Magnolia Pictures on TV in advance of their theatrical release,” says Wired.
He should, of course, also be airing his flicks online.
Cuban, “who heads HDNet Movies,” is, “betting that early screenings on his new Ultra Video on Demand service for cable subscribers will build buzz for Magnolia’s art-house movies that will boost, rather than cannibalize, box office receipts”.
The same bet would probably work with respect to the Net.

Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner’s 2929 Entertainment company and director Steven Soderbergh will use p2p as a distribution vehicle in their new joint venture.
They plan to make digital movies for simultaneous release on tv, in cinemas and on DVD. But the files will also be available online, Cuban has told p2pnet
“We’ll deliver most likely from sites like Movielink and CinemaNow, and we’ll charge a price that’s more expensive on release date and then come down in price in what would be normal release windows,” he says. “We’re delivery agnostic.”
In a later story, “Last month Bubble, their $1.6 million digital murder mystery movie, opened in Venice, Toronto, and New York and, ‘This is my response to certain trends in the entertainment industry,’ said Soderbergh’,” posted p2pnet continuing >>>
“Everything changes and evolves and we’ve got to get with it, embrace it and find a way to make it work. The movies are not the way they used to be when I grew up. It’s 30 years later!”
Robert Iger, ceo-elect of the Walt Disney Co declared, “Consumers have a lot more authority these days and they know that by using technology [read p2p applications] they can gain access to content and they want to use the power that they have. We can’t stand in the way and we can’t allow tradition to stand in the way of where the consumer can go or wants to go [read ‘We’d better shape up, or ship out’].”
With all of the above in mind, we asked Cuban if Bubble would be released using p2p as a distribution vehicle.
“No,” he told p2pnet.
Wired does a brief Q&A with Cuban:
“Wired.com: The Motion Picture Association of America is asking the FCC to waive limits on use of what it calls “selective output controls” that disable parts of the TV set. The plan is to enable studios to show pay-per-view movies at the same time as the films open in theaters. Your companies don’t belong to the MPAA, so how does your approach differ?
“Cuban: We would never add the copy protection to our movies. I don’t care what the MPAA does.
“Wired.com: Do you think Hollywood will follow suit to the point where it’ll be commonplace for people to have a choice to watch new movies either on TV or in movie theaters the same weekend?
“Cuban: No chance, because Landmark is the only national theater chain that will support HDNet’s Ultra Sneak Previews. The big media companies aren’t going to risk getting the [4,000] screen releases in place.”
