Comcast should be punished, says FCC

p2pnet news view P2P | Freedom:- Following complaints by Net neutrality advocacy group Free Press, Comcast, America’s largest cable company, should be punished for violating principles that guarantee customers open access to the Net, says Federal Communications Commission chairman Kevin Martin
“The commission has adopted a set of principles that protects consumers access to the Internet,” he told the Associated Press, saying Comcast “arbitrarily” blocked Internet access, “regardless of the level of traffic, and failed to disclose to consumers that it was doing so”.
But, “carefully limited measures” Comcast takes to, “manage traffic” on its broadband network are “reasonable,” it has company spokeswoman Sena Fitzmaurice stating.
They’re part of its strategy to, “ensure all customers receive quality service,” she says.
Comcast’s denials of traffic throttling notwithstanding, Martin will today recommending enforcement action” to his fellow commissioners, who’ll vote on the measure at an open meeting on August 1, says AP, adding Martin’s order would require Comcast to stop blocking; provide details to the commission on the extent and manner in which the practice was been used, and to disclose to consumers details on future plans for managing its network going forward.

It’s nice to see that the FCC is one agency that can show it hasn’t been completely bought out by the corporate interests – at least not the likes of Comcast and Sandvine.
But it’s not over yet. Expect a blitz of last-minute lobbying to try to sway the August ruling.

My Comcast connection speed started wierding out really bad about two months before this stuff started hitting the news ( and I don’t even do any file sharing either ). I spent close to two months trying to troubleshoot, making service calls etc. They finally wound up telling me I just needed to buy a new computer. I was on the verge of doing this – and then the girl across the hall happened to mention she’d been having the same problems and her computer IS brand new.
So I got DSL. I’ve had no problems since. It’s GREAT.
The upshot: I will NEVER use Comcast again for my internet. Ever.
