Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along: pre-cult?

p2pnet news view | Movies:- (Achtung!!!! The following isn’t an endorsement by p2pnet or catflap. Nor is it a paid, or unpaid, advertisement for anything, by anyone!)
Hardly a fortnight has gone by since the world witnessed the apparent demise of Donna “Doctor-Donna” Noble and the possible end to the current Doctor Who (David Tennant) - although (for some unexplained reason) we won’t be treated to a new fifth series until 2010, we’ll be given at least one Christmas special later this year.
But wait! There’s a new doctor in town! Doctor Horrible! And his master plan is about to be revealed, in the form of a musical “Sing-Along Blog”!
Remember “Firefly”, the (now cult) sci-fi series from a few years back? (Why is it they always call something a “cult series” when it’s been cancelled before it really had a chance to get going? Star Trek TOS, anyone?)
And remember “Serenity”, the big-screen movie sequel to “Firefly”?
And Buffy and Angel and all of their f(r)iends?
And remember the recent writers’ strike?
The brainchild behind all of these (ok, maybe not the writers’ strike) is Joss Whedon, one of a *new crop of Hollywood producers/writers/directors who don’t always play by Hollywood’s rules. *(In this instance “new” means young, bold, brass, hip, with it…etc.)
Whedon has created a new entertainment, a ’supervillain musical’, “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” —- “streaming live” and FREE this week - for one week only.
As he explains the genesis of the project >>>
Once upon a time, all the writers in the forest got very mad with the Forest Kings and declared a work-stoppage. The forest creatures were all sad; the mushrooms did not dance, the elderberries gave no juice for the festival wines, and the Teamsters were kinda pissed. (They were very polite about it, though.) During this work-stoppage, many writers tried to form partnerships for outside funding to create new work that circumvented the Forest King system. Frustrated with the lack of movement on that front, I finally decided to do something very ambitious, very exciting, very mid-life-crisisy.
And the reason >>>
It is time for us to change the face of Show Business, as we know it. You know the old adage, “It’s Show Business - not Show Friends”? Well now it’s Show Friends. We did that. To Show Business. To show Show Business we mean business.
(You go, man! Stick it to ‘em!)
Starring Neil Patrick Harris of “Doogie Howser, M.D.” fame, “Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” looks to be on the verge of becoming a smash “cult series” in its own right.
IMDb, the overlords and overseers of everything, lists it as a “TV series”. But Joss Whedon has other ideas >>>
Dr Horrible will live on. We intend to make it available for download soon after it’s published. This would be for a nominal fee, which we’re hoping people will embrace instead of getting all piratey.
“Piratey”? Moi?
… we will put the complete short epic out on DVD - with the finest and bravest extras in all the land …(where we’ll be) changing the face of Show Friendliness a second time.
“Spread the word. Let people know who wouldn’t ordinarily know. It wouldn’t hurt if this really was an event. Good for the business, good for the community - communitIES: Hollywood, internet, artists around the world, comic-book fans, musical fans (and even the rather vocal community of people who hate both but will still dig on this).”
The website doesn’t say if the free stream will be available to everyone, everywhere, or just for those with an internet connection within the continental US.
Unfortunately Joss Whedon, with all of his cool, young hip-ness, etc, is still laboring under the impression that filesharers are “pirates”, and that capturing an internet stream (and a FREE one, at that) and sharing it, is “piratey”. The stream isn’t generating any income (its FREE), and as far as I can see, there aren’t any ads on the website. So no one is losing money.
But don’t despair, my little ones. As sure as death and taxes, “Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” should be available on every p2p network with a day or so after each stream is broadcast - so no one - wherever they are - will miss out.
And even if the episodes don’t show up (hah! right, like that’ll ever happen!), when the dvd is released “somewhat later”, there’s absolutely no doubt it’ll appear in every p2p network. Because really, watching a TV series or film on a PC is lame —- so 2001.
So is Whedon really on our side?
“It’s time for the dissemination of the artistic process. Create more for less. You are the ones that can make that happen.”
Yes, we will. More for less. We, the consumer, the audience. We make it happen. We circumvent the ‘Forest King System’.
Joss Whedon says: “Shledzguohn”
Thank you for your words of wisdom, Joss. And your “truthiness”.
The schedule for “Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” looks like this:
ACT ONE (Wheee!) will go up Tuesday July 15th.
ACT TWO (OMG!) will go up Thursday July 17th.
ACT THREE (Denouement!) will go up Saturday July 19th.
All acts will stay up until midnight Sunday July 20th.
So make some room on your hard drives and rev up your p2p clients, people. Doctor Horrible’s master plan is about to unfold.
(Again, the above isn’t an endorsement by p2pnet.net or catflap. Nor is it either a paid, or unpaid, advertisement for anything, by anyone.)

I’m sticking with Doctor Who. At least his name is a pronoun I’m comfortable with because it suggests mystery and obscurity. An adjective like “Horrible” reminds me of a horn-rimmed helmeted Viking who goes home to a nagging wife.

You have a problem watching this show when you are, like me, located outside the US of A. ‘Foreigners’ are not allowed to share in this hype, so we are dependent on the appearance of this show on our neighbourly P2P network. Thanks Joss!

actually, they’ve fixed the international issues now, looks like they got stuck on the default streaming plan instead of the let-everyone-enjoy-it streaming plan.

nicolas, i have no idea where you are. are you in a communist country?
or you’re behind a proxy?
i’m also nowhere near the US, but i can view today’s act 1. i just don’t know how to capture the stream, because none of my capturing tools are working on this, but someone will surely do it.
btw, the clip has a few good laughs and easy to listen to songs - but there are no subtitles or “bouncing ball” to follow, so i don’t get the “Sing-Along” part.
from the main fan site http://doctorhorrible.net
“All those outside the USA who have been eagerly awaiting Doctor Horrible’s Act 1 should now be able to view it via the Official Web Site. If it doesn’t load, try clearing your browser cache and doing a forced refresh of the page (Hold down the Ctrl key while pressing the F5 key).”
“If you can’t get the video to work, first try clearing your browser cache/cookies. If that doesn’t work and you’re using an anti-virus or firewall program like Norton try disabling them and then refreshing the page. Don’t forget when you’re done watching it to re-enable them.”
clearly Dr, Horrible (and Joss Whedon) want everyone - that’s EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE - to view the show - for FREE.
and lamers can buy/rent a copy from itunes.

Just watched Act I; I have to say I love this type of musical/Movie, but then the US did have Cop Rock (anyone remember that disaster?).
Well, I have to say that Act I is quirky, funny… So far the actors playing Doctor Horrible and Captain Hammer (yeah!) are wonderful and if you like How I Met Your Mother, then you’ll love Doctor Horrible.
Anyway, just wanted to say that when the show is completed, I’ll be getting it for my collection..

Even though the streaming site is open internationally now, the streaming method used is unsuitable for my connection. I would have watched the streaming version if I could have, and I tried multiple times over the past few days with the same problems, so thank you ‘pirates’ for making it possible for me to watch it. I loved Part I, Part II should be done downloading in half an hour.
