Intel bets on Pacific Biosciences
p2pnet news view | Products:- Intel is following efforts by the likes of Google and Microsoft to cash in on health care.
However, it isn’t planning on making scads of money by linking illness to advertising.
Instead, Intel has co-led a $100 million round of venture capital funding for California start-up Pacific Biosciences that hopes to make DNA sequencing a routine part of medical care, says Heise Online.
The money will be used to help the company commercialise its single-molecule, real-time (SMRT) DNA sequencing platform, says the story.
The first commercial hardware is intended to be capable of analysing an individual’s complete DNA makeup in a matter of days, it has Pacific Biosciences CEOe Hugh Martin saying, and, “By 2013 the platform is projected to be able to complete the process in 15 minutes.”
Pacific Biosciences’ goal is to, “enable medical treatments to be designed with patients’ particular genetic characteristics in mind,” says Heise, adding:
“For instance, researchers may be able to determine whether individuals with particular DNA markers will respond well to a particular drug.
