Teenaged couch potatoes

p2pnet news view | Off Topic:- If you’re a teenager, you may well be, “indisposed to action or exertion; lacking in energy”.

Lazy, in other words.

At least that’s what a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggests.

Researchers measured physical activity by attaching accelerometers to about 1,000 children in 10 cities, says the San Diego Tribune.

The objective was to, “accurately measure the youngsters’ exercise levels, rather than rely on estimates from them or their parents”.

But the numbers don’t paint a pretty picture, “particularly as boys and girls enter the years past puberty,” states ABC News.

Nine-year-old girls and boys, “did a great job of meeting – and exceeding” exercise guidelines.

However, “About the time of puberty, activity levels start to decline especially in girls,” points out lead author Dr Philip Nader, a professor emeritus in the department of pediatrics at the University of California San Diego, says the story, adding:

“Nader and his colleagues found that young women dropped below the recommended 60 minutes of exercise a day threshold around age 13, while in boys it occurred later at 14.7 years.

“By age 15, teens exercised for 49 minutes on weekdays and for 35 minutes on Saturday or Sunday.”

Of course, being parked in front of a computer for hours on end, day in and day out, might also have something to do with it ;)

It’s your fault you know. P2PNet is just too dang interesting.

Who needs exercise when you’ve got this blog and torrents!

  3. Reader's Write Says:

Plus the fact they’re only interested in exercising their mouth and hips

  4. an Arse Says:

The internet is for porn! Teens are too interested in developing their newly discovered interests, which are acquired from puberty, to care about physical exercise. On the other hand, if the accelerometers were attached to the children’s arms, it would explain why boys have 14 more minutes of exercise than girls.
