NDP Copyright Candidate Tom King in Toronto

p2pnet news view Politics | P2P:- NDP candidate for Guelph Tom King is slated for a trip to Toronto on July 24.
There, he’ll meet artists, activists and academics working to halt Bill C-61, the Stephen Harper government’s planned US-style copyright legislation.
“This copyright legislation is essentially handing over years of established Canadian copyright legislation to the US entertainment industry,” says King. “The absolute protection for digital locks will allow US corporate interests to decide what Canadians can or cannot do with products they have legally purchased.
“It just doesn’t make sense.”
NDP digital spokesman Charlie Angus will also be at the meeting, organised by the Toronto Chapter of Fair Copyright Canada at the Edward Day Art Gallery, as will Ottawa University lawyer and blogger Michael Geist.
CBC radio personality Jesse Hirsch will MC the event.
“In many of the comments about Bill C-61 on BLOGS all across Canada you can hear people saying that all the parties are the same, and that we need a Canadian Pirate Party,” Digital Copyright Canada’s Russell McOrmond posted in p2pnet on Tuesday, going on:
“There is, however, something exciting happening in one party that warrants a closer look for those who think fair copyright reform is important, and that is the NDP.”
King says he’ll hold follow-up sessions for activists in Guelph.
He’s a, “noted novelist and broadcaster who most often writes about Canada’s First Nations and is an outspoken advocate for First Nations causes,” says the Wikipedia.
