UK privacy watchdog may get ‘police’ powers
p2pnet news view | Security:- Britain’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) may soon be able to make compulsory inspections under warrant where a data breach is suspected; to set deadlines for information to be handed over; and to fine organisations said to have breached a “good practice assessment”.
The UKĀ government believes it’s important the privacy watchdog is able to, “enforce the Data Protection Act in a rapidly changing environment,” says silicon.com.
“Reckless” loss of data, “was made a civil offence punishable by a fine earlier this year, although how this will be enforced has not yet been made clear,” say the story, adding:
Justice minister Michael Wills said in a statement: “We believe sharpening the information commissioner’s teeth will enable him to be a stronger, more effective regulator.”
