Janet Jackson nipple ripple
p2pnet news view | TV:- Janet Jackson’s right breast is in the news again.
Four years ago, it looked as thought it might cost the CBS TV network a cool half a million dollars.
A “wardrobe malfunction” then Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chairman Michael Powell described as “classless, crass and deplorable” caused a significant portion of Ms Jackson’s upper clothing to become seriously disarrayed during a duo she performed with Mr Justin Timberlake, p2pnet posted, going on »»»
This, in turn, led to an ‘accidental’ exposure of that which should always remain covered – unless it’s in a Hollywood movie or some such, natch.
This extreme titillation deeply offended Powell, together with thousands of viewers, but also led to a revivial of Ms Jackson’s flagging fortunes.
Anyway, now the FCC has fined 20 CBS-owned TV stations the maximum penalty for indecency – $27,500 (£15,340) – each, the largest fine ever levied against a US TV broadcaster, says the BBC Online News.
Justice has been served.
Now, to prove justice isn’t blind, as many suspect she is, “In a victory for lovers of accidental nudity, a US federal appeals court ruled yesterday that Janet Jackson’s bare breast is not worth fining anyone over,” says The Guardian, continuing:
“The 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals dismissed a $550,000 (£278,000) indecency fine against the CBS television network, stemming from the infamous ‘wardrobe malfunction’ at the 2004 Super Bowl.”
Regular p2pnet readers will recall this was the event which came to be known as the Sleeze Bowl and which also featured Apple’s attempt to use 16 teenaged RIAA victims during a blackly cynical iTunes promotion which also involved Pepsi.
Now the Jackson debacle has rippled down through the years and, “Yesterday a three-judge panel overturned the fine and criticised the FCC for acting ‘arbitrarily and capriciously’, ignoring a 30-year practice of only fining indecency that ‘amounts to “shock treatment” for the audience,” says the story.
