What I find most interesting is the fact that all the pro-china comments made in this forum have a pretty obvious accent, even in their writing. It's pretty plain to everyone that China is oppressing their people and their freedoms. The Chinese seem to be the only ones completely devoid of this knowledge, but like one of the above posts says, when you're always told what to do, it's hard to be convinced that you're unhappy when everyone is telling you that you're happy.

My suggestions are moot, since I'm just a generic network administrator in the US, but my suggestion, nonetheless, would be for the Chinese people to rise up. Their leaders (not the government) have to stand up and say something that reminds the Chinese People of their free will. It's a sad day when the most populous nation in the world is ruled not through elected officials, but fear of individuality. Since history is obviously repeating itself, we probably won't get it right this time, but i certainly don't mind trying.

I see the Chinese government has its agents here to advocate for them. Well, isn't that nice?

Irony is the Olympic Committee giving the games to China but excluding (the new) Iraq.

Why should sport be turned into a political football? Already it's rife with ugly nationalism, more suited to a nazi regime. It should be about personal achievement, not a win at any cost steroid mentality. What next, blackballing or whatever it's called? What a great idea. Everybody stay home and there won't be any games or competition.

China is a disaster already happening. The last time we saw something like this was in 1936 with Nazi Germany. Interesting how history repeats itself...

Its not surprising that the Chinese people feel great pride in their growing wealth and military power. So did the German people during the reign of the Nazis who had the wealthiest economy and most powerful army in Europe during the 1930s. What the ruling oligarchy in China believe that they have learned is that: you really don't need freedom in order for people to have prosperity and national pride. That was the argument that the Axis powers made in the 1930s and that's the same argument that countries like China and an ever more nationalist Russia are also making today.

There's no doubt in my mind that the ruling Chinese oligarchy believes that some day soon China will be the most power economy on Earth which will allow the ruling oligarchy to use the power of the purse to force the international corporations into appeasing their will.

And whoever rules the corporations, they believe, will rule the world.

You guys hate China so much only because it grows, at a speed of annual 10%GDP in last decades.
If that's the case, I just wonder what you white guys have been doing inbetween? Jerking off in all these 30 years time?

Well, you know the truth is?
White is white there. But western calls it black.
China is changing everyday. It's not like western cities where things never change. You guys need some updates to the other parts of the world.
Suggestion to you, learn some Chinese and read some Chinese websites or forums. Don't believe one-side stories on your newspaper or TV. You guys always call us Chinese the "Brainwashed". But the funny thing is, we learn English since primary school, we watch US/UK tv shows and channels and we visit western news outlets everyday. We read news from multiple perspective and take it by our own mind.
I am saying this not means China is perfect. It is not. All Chinese know. We criticize out gov't on web too. I just hope people can be more objective on China issues. China is not better or worse then any of your countries. So be constructive, stop bitching!

Eight years ago I lived in Beijing for almost 9 months. What a dirty, filthy, stinky, polluted, horrible dump China is. It also has the worst food and the rudest and pushiest culture I witnessed in my entire life. That big airport that they were showcasing a few months ago had a dirt floor and no doors only a short 8 years ago. People are so used to being told what to do that I went to a dance with my girlfriend at the time and everyone was dancing the same way to a couple of girls who were up on a stage. When my girlfriend and I took some locals and danced a waltz, everyone in the place watched us, then proceeded to do the exact same thing (I suppose that's how people act when being allowed to listen to music and dance in public are "new" things). Then when we got back to our apartnment, all our belongings had been searched by someone (nothing stolen) while we were out.

I've lived in a dozen different countries in my life and visited 14 more, and China is the only place that I would tell everyone I know to avoid at all costs. No freedom, no privacy, and urban pollution so bad that it feels like you are sucking campfire smoke when you breathe. Fuck China right in the fucking tits. Even with all the smokescreens that the Chinese government are putting up for its visitors to Beijing, I sincerely hope these Olympics open a lot of people's eyes to the biggest ass-backwards shitcrater in the world known as China.

You do realize thank to xenophobes like you Chinese goverment is more popular than ever, and those dissidents are less popular than ever, you protest the Iraq war by glorifying AlQuida.

The amusing thing is the PEW survey put Chinese as the most optimistic and most confident in their goverment, that's up 30% in the last 3 years, all the while in the "land of the free" people are more pessimistic than ever. Face it, you are pissed off you have to walk off the podium, and since there's really nothing you can do about it, resorting to "human rights activism" is the only symbolic way of getting back at China, regardless if it's even going to help human rights itself.
