Mac G5 is cool
p2pnet.net News:- The coolest thing about the new Mac G5 is its heat-reduction technology.
The first Power Mac on IBM’s new 90-nanometer PowerPC 970FX chip, it has maintenance-free, closed-loop water cooling with a dash of propylene glycol.
Interesting. This kind of technology is usually found only in costly gaming PCs and/or high-performance computing or scientific systems.
However, only the top model, with two 2.5 GHz processors, “the industry’s fastest front-side bus running at 1.25 GHz per processor,” has it. The other two models in the new line make do with fans, although all three come with dual 64-bit PowerPC G5 processors.
In terms of performance, “On a test of 45 commonly used actions, Adobe Photoshop ran almost twice as fast on a dual 2.5 GHz Power Mac G5 than on a 3.4 GHz Pentium 4-based PC,” says Apple here.
“Logic Pro 6 on the dual 2.5 GHz Power Mac G5 played up to 138 more tracks with reverbs (over four times more) than with Cubase SX on a 3.4 GHz Pentium 4-based PC; and Final Cut Pro® HD running on a 2.5 GHz Power Mac G5 can run eight streams of 8-bit SD video versus five streams on a dual 3.06 GHz Xeon-based Avid workstation.”
$1,999 suggested retail
- Dual 1.8 GHz 64-bit PowerPC G5;
- 256MB 400 MHz 128-bit DDR SDRAM (4GB maximum);
- 80GB Serial ATA 7200 rpm hard drive;
- AGP 8X Pro graphics slot;
- NVIDIA GeForceFX 5200 Ultra with 64MB DDR SDRAM;
- 3 PCI slots (64-bit, 33 MHz); and
- 8x SuperDrive? (DVD-R/CD-RW).
$2,499 suggested retail
- Dual 2.0 GHz 64-bit PowerPC G5;

- 160GB Serial ATA 7200 rpm hard drive;
- AGP 8X Pro graphics slot;
- NVIDIA GeForceFX 5200 Ultra with 64MB DDR SDRAM;

Comparing performance in different programs (ex., pro logic and cubase; pro logic is on the pc too btw) doesn’t seem like the best way to go about these things either.
June 10th, 2004 at 6:11 pm
The Dual Xeon 3.2 didn’t fair much better. I doubt you’d see much of a boost with that extra 200 Mhz per CPU on a dual 3.4 Ghz Xeon.
Complain about the lack of a dual-Opteron benchmark if you must…
June 10th, 2004 at 6:18 pm
From a user’s perspective they pay x amount of dollars for a computer and applications and in return they get y performace. If you look at it from this perspective the Mac wins hands down especially if you consider all the down time from security issues and program and system reinstalls you have with windows on the PC…I can’t wait to dump windows…I can’t wait till the world dumps window. I’m tired of wasting my time with microsoft crap-ware.

Thinking of upgrading and would prefer a laptop; is it worth the wait?
June 10th, 2004 at 6:32 pm
The intent here, or at least the spin Apple is going for, is to answer the question, “if I want the best possible performance for video editing at reasonable cost, what system should I choose?” I don’t know enough about video editing under Windows to know if they did a good job answering that question.
They are not trying to answer the purely academic question, “under otherwise identical circumstances, which processor gives the best performance per clock cycle.”

Microsoft is leap years ahead of Apple in terms of security. Just because all of the hackers are taking pot shots at MS doesn’t make windows less secure. It’s all the friggin morons that don’t apply their security patches. The latest security issue that the Crapintosh was very poorly handled by Apple. This G5 is a piece of dog s@#$. $3000 for a dual processor system? There are way cheaper and more robust systems out there in IBM compatible land that run 100x the amount of software and integrate much better with computer networks. Only flamers like you who don’t know s#$! about computer systems would buy this piece of crap.

“This coming form a VB/ASP.NET noob?”
He is a professional VB/ASP.NET programmer. In what possible way is he a noob? How much do you earn a year you fucking retard?
“Your job depends on MS u retard.”
And how is this relevent except to prove that a Wintel developer believes that the PowerMac G5 is superior. Read that as “unbiased”.
As for benchmarks, Dell, Compaq and Gateway have also posted misleading and rigged results to SPEC. What would be your point? That all PC manufacturers mislead their customers?

June 10th, 2004 at 7:15 pm
There will always be something bigger, faster and/or better out there, no matter when you decide to purchase.
I’d ask myself if I really need a laptop at this moment in time and is it worth the performance hit and economic hit compared to a desktop. And if it is worth it, then to go with the best laptop you can reasonably afford that will accomplish your goals. The iBook G4 is an attractive option if you are looking at price/performance. Also PC laptops are also quite attractive from the price/performance aspect. This will depend on whether you use Mac software or PC software primarily. If it’s just web browsing and e-mail, then go with either. MS Office 2004 is the latest version of MS Office and it is only available on Mac currently. Either platform provides a lot of software for almost any application. Apple bundles a lot of cool, free applications such as iTunes, iChat, AppleWorks, iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand and iDVD with the computer you purchase. PC companies usually bundle a lot of third party apps and demos for free too.
June 10th, 2004 at 7:18 pm
once again, let’s compare a 64bit graphics processor with a 32bit processor designed for multi-threaded servers. you mac lovers never cease with the apples to oranges comparison. just for the record, i’ll bet a nice healthy dual Opteron system under $3000 would be quite competitive with this new offering from Apple. and would probably be able to run more than the 5 programs and one flavor of *nix that Apple currently restricts its users to.
if i had a custom coded version of *nix, and a couple Opterons, i’ll bet i’d lay waste to any benchmark set by the G5, and i wouldn’t flub around for two months when a ROOT LEVEL EXPLOIT showed up in my operating system.
June 10th, 2004 at 7:26 pm
Five programs? Are you retarded?
June 10th, 2004 at 7:29 pm
5 programs? You’ve never USED a Mac have you? I run (at the same time mind you) FCP 4.5, LiveType, SoundTrack, Photoshop, Safari (browser) and usually one or two others. Or if I am doing development, I usually Have Keynote, Photoshop, Fireworks, Safari, Illustrator and sometimes Freehand running.
If I wanted to, I could run Linux on this box, and I already run XP under Virtual PC. And I still have a Dual G4!
As for the Root level exploit…I think all of ONE user got bit by that, because he downloaded what he THOUGHT was a bootleg Microsoft app and instead got a trojan horse. Heh, I say he deserved it. NO ONE got bit by the url exploit or mp3 hack that was tested. NOT ONE. I have NEVER EVER caught a virus, or had any spyware on my mac. Never had anyone hack it, never had anyone access it so as to install something on it without my knowledge, never had problems with e-mail due to viruses (unless you count getting hundreds of useless virus messages from PC users that don’t do anything). This week Apple patched the url exploit problem with a new security patch. Meanwhile every client I have who owns a PC has been infected in the last several months, one with MULTIPLE spyware apps, and they were behind a router.
If you don’t know what you’re talking about, don’t open your mouth and prove you’re an idiot.
June 10th, 2004 at 7:30 pm
I own both a Mac and several PCs, and in the sime time period since I’ve owned my Mac I have had more frequent security updates on my Mac running OS X Panther than on the PCS running Windows XP, all of which required me to download and restart my system.
June 10th, 2004 at 7:31 pm
Apple benchmarks are slanted to favor the system they’re advertising!? Jebus Marx, next you’re going to tell me politicians lie during campaigns.
Guys, really, just admit that Macs are historically more expensive than comparable PCs and that liquid cooling is neat.
June 10th, 2004 at 7:33 pm
It’s going to be a while — the G5 is too hot to put in a laptop right now. The G4s are warm enough that you don’t keep it in your lap very long!
The other reply suggests the iBook. While this is definitely cheaper, the difference in performance is noticeable compared to the PowerBook. If you can afford the PowerBook and are sure you want to go with a laptop, that’s my recommendation.
And they do last. My 2 yr old PB is still my primary home computer. I want a new one, but that’s only because the new ones are cool — my current one is fine.
June 10th, 2004 at 7:39 pm
What’s your point? That Apple is taking security seriously by responding to potential vulnerabilities? What nerve! How many viruses, worms and trojans have you suffered from in OS X? I count zero for me.
June 10th, 2004 at 7:42 pm
i hate macs i think they suck big time. those who bought are wasting there money . pretty soon mac be like beta machines they be gone with they wind. thats like windows.

As an Electrical/Computer engineer I have only one thing to say to this madness… GET SOME WORK DONE!!! No one is going to use a G5 or dual Intel config when its going to push them to the limit in high end research applications. They use supercomputers or even more common now clusters of 1 ghz machines(remember, researchers dont care about doing 20 sec calcs in 5, theyre worried about getting multihour or day processes done faster to let them get more work done). In fact, in the real world, most engineers use junky slow Sun machines because thats what all the good software is being written for these days.(mainly to prevent code stealing!) Real professionals would rather blow their budget on new test equipment than stupid computers that let me solve a mathematica integral in 2 seconds instead of 10.(and hey, waiting for these calcs used to be the closest thing to a break i got!) In the end, web pages will load just about as fast on any new computer, and thats all most people use it for anyway.(i’m guessing the benchmarks for IRC, ICQ, AIM, Word etc are about there too) Anyone who cant wait an extra 10 minutes or so for video encoding must be a very important person(Prime Minister of some country im guessing)
As for gamers, go ahead and blow your money on 300 fps gameplay on your 60 hz new LCD monitor(and seeing what percent of those glorious frames?). Don’t worry, by wasting time, you leave more jobs for the rest of us. Get a life people.
June 10th, 2004 at 7:46 pm
It’s too bad you’re not literate. Aren’t you late for homeroom?
June 10th, 2004 at 7:51 pm
That’s right, you Mac-heads can take your dual-processor-Mac-to-single-processor-PC comparisons to the races, but Apples are DIFFERENT COMPUTERS than PCs. Quit saying they’re the same. You don’t race Formula 1 cars vs. NASCARs.
I’m an audio pro, and I’ve got no problems using a PC or Mac, but it’ll be a frosty day in Hades before I buy a Mac for every day / gaming use. The only thing they’ve got going right now is stylin’ cases.

Or you could just be a lying douchebag. There’s no way the Mac has as many games as the PC (including a hell of a lot of FPS crap) but let’s see you stop counting at six using the list of OS X compatible games below. In the mean time, I’ll stick to using my Mac for video, audio and web work and a PS2 for games.

First, maybe a Mac will make you a better speller and us better grammer. Second, don’t hate on something til you try it. Say your comment to a room full of graphic designers. (Yes, I know not all GD’s use Macs but the majority do.)
June 10th, 2004 at 8:29 pm
First, Mac is simply more trouble free. Next, for imaging pros like myself who spend most of the computer time on Photoshop et al, the Dual processors do work, like gangbusters. If you simply a gaming nerd, the pc is best for you. if you’re a visual pro, the mac is best. If you’re an average home user, guess what, the Mac is best because it doesn’t crap out on you. Let’s face it, the pc is like a ‘71 VW bug, you need two engines to keep it running ’cause you’re always working on one.

You’re dreaming about the relative security of Microsoft vs. Apple. When was the last Apple virus … over 3 years ago. How about malware … it doesn’t work on Macintosh.
And about that critical security problem in the past month. How many computers were hurt by it? Zero, Zilch, Nada.
Even if Microsoft were more secure, which it isn’t, it’s about the effect on the users. Apple Macintosh users have not had to scamble when the latest trojan is released to get updated, nor have they had to purchase anti-virus software (they do so that when they forward email from a winteller they don’t spread the virus further to their wintel friends). They don’t have to purchase firewall software because it is build in. Their computers are locked down when they are shipped from Apple and only open necessary ports for the software on the machine.
Only wintel apologists say the Mac isn’t gettting infected because of it’s market share. It’s a naive statement. If Mac’s are so easy to compromise, go ahead and do it and let use know. Somehow I don’t think I’ll be hearing from you.
June 10th, 2004 at 8:35 pm
You are all missing the point of this article!
The fact is that a commercial company just put a LIQUID COOLING SYSTEM into a mainstream computer! PC companies will jump this immediatly and start doing the same! It’s common buisness sense to do so.
June 10th, 2004 at 8:47 pm
Are macs still being shipped with a 1 button mouse??? I always hated that about them.
June 10th, 2004 at 8:49 pm
Macs suck balls!
June 10th, 2004 at 8:56 pm
Wow! Another new FASTER Apple. Maybe Apple should look to serve its customer base as well as it is in bringing a new improved computer every couple of months. Every single time they create a new technology the benefits are always at the very top and only for new users. And anyone who has older Apple technology, if left out.
I am a Graphic artist and I used to be one of those âApple is the best, and widows suck!â people. Had a Performa, with the top 603 chip technology. Moved up to the affordable Apple: the Motorola, Starrmax with the 604e chip (Back when Apple licensed its operating system.)
Then the new G3, then the duel G4 400mhz. Needed to add more newer faster peripherals so I moved up the Quicksilver dual 800mhz with 1G RAM, oh the speed was going to be great! Right? Wrong! Due to Apple insisting that the new Macs boot only in OSX no more 9.3 for me. SO I had problems running all my programs in OSX, and the speed boost was taken over by OSX, in other words the programs ran the same if not slower for me. UPGRADED ALL MY PROGRAMS TO RUN IN OSX! Expensive! Then came Jaguar, the new improver OSX that can manage doth the G4 chips.
Oh! But here is the new Mac native Font manager, and Safari the Apple web browser, great! Right? Wrong again! Microsoft stopped supporting the Mac version of Internet Explorer, the one I have been using for years now. Thanks Apple! Then Extensis stopped supporting its font management tool for Mac. Ok, no problem, BUT! The Apple font management tool Sucks! And it gives me the eternal Beach Ball of death.
So the OSX is the most stable system ever made right? Sure, the OSX never crashes, but most of my applications do! And guess what? I lost quite a bit of my work that way on an APPLE!?
So I had a client who needed work done on a Windows PC.
I tried the old Apple is the best routine, but to no avail. I went and looked until I saw what I wanted, A top of the line SONY VAIO 2.5Ghz with all the bells and whistles. Price? 1400.00, Next thing I know Iâm loving this machine and my Apple is collecting dust next to my (half the price, and have much more things in it) SONY. After Apple shared its technology with Microsoft Windows XP is the best OS I have used to date.
New G5? No thanks Mac! I had it with you.
P.S. And get rid of that annoying bar at the bottom (or side) I’m sure as usual all Apples customers requests will go unanswered.
June 10th, 2004 at 9:20 pm
Please whatever you do. DO not get a MAC! I’m a Mac person, and I have shelled out more money then I care to mention.
Most PC manufactures suck as well so donât go out and get a piece of S*** Dell or gateway. The best choice would be a SONY VAIO.
Trust me on this.

June 10th, 2004 at 9:29 pm
So thereâs about 600 games for Mac. You also forgot to mention that MAC can play playstation games as well. But I do have to mention that most of the new games for Mac are either BIG hits from the PC side or just plain boring and old. We had Bungie who rocked and we were expecting HALO for MAC only! But Bungie was bought by Microsoft and HALO went to X-BOX only! (Now for PC as well). So please stop defending MAC at least in this case, because we are clearly out of our league on this. Did I mention that all the MAC games are twice the price of the same PC game? Not always but enough times to piss me off.

I do a lot of video processing at home. I used to do all my work on a single processor G4 (450mzh) but recently moved to a dual processor G5 (1.8ghz)
The performance difference is nothing short of astounding. To fully produce a 2 minute clip on the G4 used to take almost 10 hours of time from start to finish (including scene selection, music selection and synching etc). Much of the 10 hours was occupied by rendering, and re-rendering the various layers of video as I edited, changed transitions, layered new video tracks etc.
Since my move to the Dual Processor G5, I can now produce a two minute clip, including all the same work processes as before, in less than two hours. The major reason for that is the fact that I no longer have to wait on the video to render, it now happens in real time.
I’m not a vip or the Prime Minister of some country anywhere, but the extra performance of the G5 has significantly affected my work production regardless. Time is still very valuable to me and the G5 is the best computing choice I have made to date.
June 10th, 2004 at 11:45 pm
there are comperable options for video editing and production on the market today that have a much less price tag is what my point was(and lower tech factor). Scoring 10% higher on a benchmark will not make a difference in anyones life unless they really need the few extra minutes to meet with the king of jordan. And true professionals would have much better options avaliable to them than using a cruddy G5 and bundled software(this is a significant issue with Mac for professionals i must say, Hardware compatability…) If someone enjoys Mac OS and wants a clean stable experience, get a g5. But stop squabbling over stupid benchmarks and such. No one should care if Wintel or Mac platforms are better if they actually use them for things besides benchmarks!
Also, upgrading from a g4 to a g5 machine really doesnt address the issue i was attacking, which was the old Wintel vs. Mac vs. Sun/SPARC(oh god, remember this) vs. everything. I’d say upgrading from a g4 to something was long overdue(just that whether it was to a g5 or a p4 HT or amd athlon will make no difference in your life)^^

Well spoken. Mac OS X is based on open standards and can be defended by more developers than can attack it. Besides it’s a whole lot harder for punk hackers to learn the coding necessary for Unix abuse. Waaaaaaaaaaaay too difficult. Period.

yes, this is long overdue. The silence of liquid cooling will really appease younger people, like college students, who sleep in the room their computers are!(sleepless nights just to run a server or something are horrid and can definately make someone regret getting a faster computer!) So yes, i hope the world is listening to mainstream watercooling(students also have low budgets, and needing to buy expensive equipment on the side is quite annoying!)

You had major problems with your Mac if you are trying to run OS 9.3. Since they never released that version, nor ever made a build of it.
I respect the fact that you think you will have a great computer with the VIAO. Just for fun why don’t you keep a log of how many times you have pop-up windows and the gator software installed on your computer and how long it takes you to get rid of it. Calculate that into the ammount of time you could have been relaxing or working or getting more customers. Also keep track of how many times you get a virus. As well as the cost of anti-virus programs and subscriptions after your first virus attack. Now count that up and add the 64-bit applications you will have to re-buy in 2006 when Microsoft finally goes to a 64-bit OS.
PS. You dont’ need to be buying a new computer (mac or pc) every year and a half. Just correctly manage the computer you have.

I really don’t care if the Apple Computer Mac OS X G5 machines are a little or a lot faster than the Dull Wintels. The overall quality and innovation available from Apple Computers is way better and years ahead of the PC clone products.
Why drive a PC clone Yugo if I can drive a Apple Computer BMW?
The pack of Apple Computer users are mavericks and feel secure outside of the 95% computer users of the PC flock.

“And they do last. My 2 yr old PB is still my primary home computer. I want a new one, but that’s only because the new ones are cool — my current one is fine.
”
I agree completely with this. My older PowerBook G3 is still so good that I can’t find a valid excuse to upgrade to the G4’s.
Whatever you do. DO get a MAC! I’m a Mac person, and my wife had a Dull … (problems) then a Gateway. She now borrows my iMac and PowerBook ll the time. Her next laptop will be a Mac.
Trust me on this.

If you were a video editor or effects editor, you’d see this as a blessing. It’s the faster the better in that field. I just wish I could afford one right now. My Dual 867 will have to get my by for now.

Apparently the subtle art of sarcasm escapes you, as does the ability to form a witty insult better than “douchebag”.

I take that to infer that illiterates prefer PCs.

I was using language I hoped you would understand. Statements like, “the only thing they’ve got going right now is stylin’ cases,” is indicative of a narrow minded outlook and not exactly subtle nor an artform. “Frosty day in Hades” was, however, incredibly clever and original. Is that sarcasm?

Your right about 9.3 it was a typo I meant 9.2. Anyway youâre right again about the viruses. I did have to spend quite a bit of time on that at first. The reason is that on Mac I always depended on Norton system works. So I got the same for the windows OS. Unfortunately Norton is one of the worst if not the worst virus protection programs out there, unless you get the big bad expensive dressiness version. Did not help that there is a virus with the name Norton that was in my system that Norton itself could not find. But after I purchased McAfee Virus Scan all my troubles are over.
As far as pop ups, I get the same amount as I do with my apple. MacAfee stops them if I choose to.
As far as why I bought a new Mac every year, itâs simple. I was a Mac fanatic, I wanted every one in my family to use Apple ever sense my first Macintosh Plus so I gave them my old one (Also an excuse to get the latest one.) like I said I loved Apple Excluding the starrmax from Motorola because I could not see the reason to spend an additional 400$ for the exact same item running the same operating system from Apple.:-). Not to mention that as a Graphic artist I need speed, or I should say my Adobe products need speed. Has nothing to do with management.
Hope that clarifies.
Donât try and catch me as a Wintell poser, slamming Apple Macintosh. No one was as die hard as me (Iâm just not that stupid to buy in to all this crap sometimes.). The only one I bow down to is Scott Kelby, and Steven Wozniak. Steve Jobs let me down with all the layoffs and the Ipod thing (Got one of those too.). Visit http://www.ipodsdirtysecret.com/ for details on that. Good job with PIXAR though.

P.S. I always respected SONY in there designs skills. Itâs a good looking machine unlike all those Apple copy cats, they went there own design route. I donât like the way SONY studios is conducting business but that another story all together.
June 11th, 2004 at 11:37 pm
I never tried to say that Mac computers are not cool or good. I’m just saying that for the price of one top of the line Mac (The one we all want to get, despite the fact that people always say “Oh! You donât need that one, get this little Ibook instead.”) You could get 2 possibly 3 SONY computers. Plus at Apple, they treat there customers like crap. Itâs not like if Apple treats you bad; you move on to another Macintosh from a deferent maker, they did away with that idea years ago now. So youâre stuck with the horrible service and constant stopped OS support. If you donât upgrade donât bother us motto has got to go.
–Paxiâ
P.S. Donât mean to plug in SONY so much, but as far as PCâs itâs the only one that is built right to last, and looks at least decent. All other PC manufacturers seem to be always making a horrible copy of Mac computer designs.

Ah come on.. You gotta be kidding me. When I was into PCs (which was the last 15 years my whole life until last year) I had never used the mouse that was shipped with a system. I always bought a new logitech three button mouse. The mouse Apple ships with has one button, but if you’re a poweruser you buy a new mouse or have one laying around your house to plug in.

comment on sonyh desing skills, apple bought the powerbook design from sony, so noi wonder you like it =)
