p2pnet news view | Off Topic:- A massive chunk of ice of almost eight square miles (20 square km) which split from an ice shelf along the northern Canadian coast represents further evidence of serious global warming, say scientists.

“Derek Mueller (right), a polar scientist and research fellow at Trent University, in Peterborough, Ont., said the ice breaking off from the Ward Hunt Island Ice Shelf, just north of Ellesmere Island, marks the continuation of a process that has been years in the making,” states the CBC.

“Ice shelves don’t just break up,” it has him saying. “There’s no karate chop.

“This is the result of a gradual weakening over time as a result of warming temperatures.”

Arctic researchers say thousands of square kilometres of old ice across the Arctic have broken away, “changing shorelines, forcing native communities to relocate and change their hunting grounds,” says the Toronto Star, adding:

“The loss of the ice could have dire consequences for climate change. The white surface of ice deflects the sun’s rays. Without the ice, the dark water absorbs the heat, causing more ice to melt, potentially leading to higher water levels around the world.”
