Ted ‘Net Tubes’ Stevens indicted: FBI probe
p2pnet news view | Politics:- In the summer of 2006, Ted Stevens, 84, Alaska’s longest serving Republican senator and chairman of the Commerce Committee, described the Net is a “series of tubes“.
“With one company,” he declared, “now you can sign up and you can get a movie delivered to you daily by subscription, by delivery service. And currently it comes to your house, it gets put in the mail box when you get home and you change your order. But you pay for that. Right?”
He went on, “This service is not going to go through the internet and what you do is you just go to a place on the internet and you order your movie and guess what? You can order ten of ‘em delivered to you! And the delivery charge is free. Right?
Almost exactly a year ago FBI and Internal Revenue Service agents searched Stevens’ home, “amid a corruption probe that has already snared two oil-company executives and a state lobbyist,” said CNN.
Now he’s being indicted on charges that he lied about accepting gifts from an oil contractor, says the Associated Press.
The first sitting US senator to face federal indictment since 1993, he says he’s innocent, according to the story, which goes on:
“Whether Stevens will indeed press ahead despite being stripped of his powerful committee posts – or seek an exit strategy that might keep his once safe seat in GOP hands – is anybody’s guess.
“But media queries about Stevens’ future are likely to engulf Republican efforts Wednesday to keep voters focused on Democrats’ refusal to open restricted areas such as Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling.”
From May 1999 to August 2007, prosecutors said, Stevens concealed “his continuing receipt of hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of things of value from a private corporation,” says AP.
